Busou Renkin - 11: Till Death Do Us Part

Title:Busou Renkin
Episode:11: Till Death Do Us Part
Synopsis
Having lost his wager with Kazuki, Shuusui explains the "wish" he and his sister were fighting for. First of all, he relates the sad story of their childhood: the woman they thought was their mother was in fact a kidnapper who raised them without ever allowing them out of their one-room apartment. This woman wasted away and died before their eyes, and their true parents refused to take custody of them. Unable to trust anyone but each other, Shuusui and Oka ran away together to avoid being seperated. Hungry and homeless, Shuusui one night attempted to rob Dr. Butterfly, who saw some use in the two and took them in as human "disciples" of the LXE. Their wish was to be transformed into homunculi someday, "to attain lives in which even death cannot seperate us". But their situation seems hopeless now; they've lost their battle, and even if they were spared, the penalty for failure would be to be devoured by the genuine homunculi. Tokiko feels little pity and wants to finish them off; but Kazuki, who still regrets being unable to prevent Chouno from becoming a homunculi, argues that the twins can still be saved. Papillon is watching; "Well, things won't go well for those twins" he comments. "The dark world of alchemy they've lived in up until now isn't something they can seperate themselves from so quickly"...
Comments
It was shocking how Shuusui double-crossed Kazuki at one point (just repaying a favor from the last episode, I guess). He seemed to have gone totally evil, yet was back to normal almost immediately, which was confusing. The first half of the episode could have "flowed" better--I kept getting mixed signals about whether I should pity or despise Shuusui, which was a bit disappointing. Kazuki went on about not wanting to kill anyone--anyone still human, that is--yet he kinda impaled Shuusui last time, so that wasn't entirely convincing. So, the first half was a mix of clever, moving touches and overdone, almost corny ones, which was odd. The second half was a laugh riot. "Moonface" is hilarious, even funnier than Papillon in a way. How does anybody dream up characters like these? The doctors in the hospital were rich, too. So, it looks like Shuusui and Oka will wind up alchemic warriors themselves, though not 'til they've recuperated. They do appear alongside Captain Bravo in the OP sequence after all.
