Busou Renkin - 09: The Hayasaka Siblings

Title:Busou Renkin
Episode:09: The Hayasaka Siblings
Synopsis
On a rainy day, Kazuki and Tokiko are loaned an umbrella by the beautiful Hayasaka Oka, the student council president. while returning it, they meet her twin brother Shuusui, a member of the kendo club. His skill is awesome, to the extent that nobody else wants to spar with him. Shuusui's wish "to become as strong as I can possibly be" reminds Kazuki of himself, and he volunteers to serve as Hayasaka's next opponent. He winds up with quite a bruise, but the two strike up a friendship and agree to continue practicing together. Dr. Butterfly wants Papillon to identify the Alchemic Warriors, but he refuses since he intends to deal with them himself. Instead the Doctor assigns two more homunculi to search for them--the Hayasaka twins. The mission must be handled discreetly, since "that place is the dining hall where his rebirth will be celebrated". If the twins succeed they will each be awarded a Kakugane and their "wish" will be granted. But Tai and Shi, LXE's "Titan Combo", have other ideas...

This show frequently cracks me up to an extent which pure comedies often fail to do. It's hard to define, but it has a sort of creepy craziness to it (the code which LXE members must recite as a password was good). Also neat is the backstabbing and rivalry among the homunculi. Since the Hayasaka twins appear in the OP sequence, I think it's safe to say that they won't wind up villains of the week, and--who knows?--they might even defect and wind up allies of Kazuki and Tokiko. They haven't done anything totally despicable (I sort of like them), and may just be doing wrong because they have some sort of precious wish which they need Dr. Butterfly to grant. How did they wind up homunculi? I'm eager for the next episode, to see how things work out. The three-way battle at the end was neat--usually shows just pour on the violence without bothering with shifting alliances. It was fun when the characters didn't know everything and were acting on suspicions. Finally, the soft, soothing ED song works well to wrap episodes up.

My favorite line: "Amazing, it's stuck on the wall!" --Tai (or was it Shi?)
