Title: | Busou Renkin |
Episode: | 08: Night in the Dormitory |
Synopsis | |
After watching Captain Bravo handily defeat Kinjou, Kazuki asks to be allowed to become an Alchemic Warrior himself. Bravo warns him that the alchemic abilities he already possesses will be insufficient and he'll have to undergo "merciless" training; Kazuki agrees. Bravo also warns Tokiko that she, too, needs further self-training, to "awaken the warrior within you once again". Bravo interrogates Kinjou, but before any useful information can be obtained he is despatched by a comrade, Jinnai. Papillon resents the fact that he hasn't been provided with a kakugane by Dr. Butterfly, but Kinjou was. Later, Bravo briefs Kazuki and Tokiko on his plans. Papillon, he feels, represents a relatively minor threat that can wait. Also, he doubts that the LXE is planning anything major anytime soon--because the "traitor warrior" is probably not ready for action yet. So, the first priority will be Kazuki's training, since Kazuki is not yet capable of dealing with human-type homunculi. Tokiko volunteers to help, but he assigns her to remain at school and protect the kakugane that was taken from Kinjou. After a hearty meal Bravo and Kazuki depart. That night, Tokiko is in her domitory room when she is startled by ear-splitting high-pitched soundwaves. "Now" Jinnai whispers, "search for my precious treasure, my cute beasts"... | |

Just watching the exciting, fast-paced OP sequence of this show leaves me with a grin on my face. Action-packed, fun, humorous, but not at all disturbing, this is one of my favorite series of the fall season, and the thought occured to me that this would be the show for which I should be compiling episode reviews. Some people can't take Papillon seriously, but I love him--Kazuki is an OK main character, but he can't match the criminally insane Papillon for sheer flamboyance (like the time he corrects the way Tokiko pronounces his name). I hope he doesn't wind up dead at the end of the series--how many villains can you say that about? Tokiko is probably my second favorite character, and here we get a pretty good idea of what it was that motivated her to become an Alchemic Warrior. It was nice for her to get the limelight for an episode. There are some loopholes in the plot, like how was this particular incident hushed up, and why wasn't Tokiko affected by the "Noisy Hamelin" tactic? But this show clearly doesn't take itself too seriously, which, again, is something I like about it. I enjoy the balance between serious action and wild comedy. My favorite line: "The only ones who can stop abnormal enemies are those who live in a world which has also surpassed reality, as theirs has; that is, us" --Captain Bravo |
