Solty Rei - 4: Friend

Title:Solty Rei
Episode:4: Friend
Synopsis
Yute Steele, the Resemble engineer who examined Solty at the hospital, and has now been hired by Miranda, reveals that Solty is completely artificial, without a trace of organic material. He is in awe, since it is supposed to be impossible to create a Resemble that is more than 60 percent mechanical. Solty is not a "robot" he insists, more "a work of art!". While on her usual daily walk, Solty runs into a crying girl. She is Meryl Tyler, who has gotten lost. Meanwhile, as Solty helps Meryl find her way home, the girls of the RUC Security Division are hunting for Jack McQuinn, a "78 percent Resemble made with the absolute latest technology"--and an escaped condemned prisoner. They almost catch him, but he refuses to return to the "Research Facility" and escapes. At Meryl's home, Solty is intrigued by the concept of "family". She initially agrees to have dinner with the Tylers, but realizes how late it is and leaves--but not before she agrees to visit her new friend Meryl again tommorrow. Miranda, Kasha and Yute are worried about her going missing, but Roy reasons "She's a robot. Why worry about her?". Solty returns home, concludes that Roy is angry, and employs a "spell" which Meryl uses whenever her father is displeased with her. The next day, Solty and Meryl are out together when they run into Jack McQuinn. His threatening actions lead Solty to decide "I don't like you"...

Clearly a person can be composed of more than 60 percent Resemble parts. "Resemble" kind of reminds me of "Automail" from Fullmetal Alchemist, and even characters from Ghost In The Shell. The RUC girls, who had hoped to recapture McQuinn, make a curious remark that "destroying" him would be better than allowing "the secret" to be revealed. RUC, by the way, stands for "Reestablishment Universe Committee"--whatever that means. I'm continually in awe of the extra lengths that the makers of this show went to for the sake of maintaining a high standard of quality. Characters are likeable (or intentionally dislikeable), and the mystery behind Solty intrigues me. Animation is excellent, especially since I think this was a TV series--even background characters move around freely. Most impressive of all is the background art--I wouldn't mind having some of these stills framed and hung on the wall of my room.
