| Kei comes home and finds Kishimoto in a surprisingly good mood after having seen her "original" self virtually put her in a state of shock. "For some reason, I feel relieved" she says. "I feel as though I've been living my whole life for my mother's sake... From now on, I'm going to try to live my own life". She declares that she has found someone she loves--but not the person Kei was expecting. At Kato's house, Ayumu seems aware that something strange is going on with his brother, and begs Kato not to get himself killed. Tetsuo and his biker friends are lured into a trap by another gang. Hojo, his female stalker, Grandma, and Ryota (her grandson) are involved in a traffic accident. Meanwhile, the veterans of the last alien hunt each feel a chill run down their spines, then a ringing in their ears... | |

| Stretch: Goddamn these two-episode discs!! Just when things are getting good they run out. I was giggling at the new recruits reactions to arriving in the room with Gantz, and I find the actual alien hunts a good deal less disturbing than the violence inbetween missions. Take a look at the "Overstock.com" website for a Gantz Season 1 package. The price is surprisingly reasonable, even for a set that has yet to be officially released (release date: 2/21/06). Postage is very low, too, especially compared to the rates you're often charged at E-bay or Amazon.com. What happened to that kickass biker chick from the bookstore? Maybe she has yet to arrive, or will take part in the next mission; surely she will reappear in the story at some point. I'm guessing the "Suzaki Alien" will dine on Tetsuo's three friends pretty quickly whereas he will last awhile, since he's gotten a fair amount of character development. We finally get an explanation as to why the original Kishimoto tried to kill herself; I wonder if her new self will ever try to contact her original self. No doubt Gantz would frown upon such behavior, but as Nishi put it, Gantz can be pretty sloppy and may not even be aware that the original Kishimoto has survived. Finally, if there's one easy way to "localize" an anime, it's to insert the careless use of profanity that's commonplace in America nowadays. For example: "Like I care!" (Sub) becomes "Who gives a shit?" (Dub); or "You better not be playing dumb!" (Sub) becomes "You better not be fucking with us!" (Dub). This is one reason why I generally prefer Subbed versions of my anime. | |
