Gantz - 22: Don't Say It Again!

Title:Gantz
Episode:22: Don't Say It Again!
Synopsis
Two weeks have passed since the destruction of the Ratenin Temple. Kei, the sole survivor of the last hunt, awaits the next summons from Gantz dressed in his power suit. A series of misfortunes strike a number of people: A woman is being chased by a stalker; a teenager falls into a swiftly flowing river; Kei's teacher is attacked by a knife-wielding woman; a deeply indebted man is pursued by punks; the bookstore owner chases a shoplifter; and the two homeless hunters have a run-in with the yakuza. Once he transports to Gantz's apartment, Kei recognizes several of these people. He attempts to explain the situation in the same manner as Kato used to do. When the music starts to play, he demands that Gantz hurry up and reveal their target. He's in for a surprise...

Okay... The first half of the episode was rather a downer as miserable people suffer from all sorts of accidents and violence, and I was tempted to turn it off and watch something else. Once things move to the apartment it got more interesting (as usual). I'm grateful that there wasn't an episode or two between missions (which would have no doubt been composed of the same depressing sort of stuff as composed the first half of this episode). I thought the scenes of Kei visiting the bookstore and the "original" Kishimoto were clever--too bad there's not more of that sort of stuff in this series. The new recruits introducing themselves offered a golden opportunity to keep track of their names:
Furuda Giichi--the 50-year old bookstore owner;
Uehara Yoshino--Kei's teacher;
Nozaki Daichi--the blond delinquent who drowned;
Kajimura Ryuji--the black-haired homeless hunter;
Muroto Hajime--the lt. blue haired hunter;
Kanda Mika--the black haired woman who was killed by a stalker;
and
Saito Nozumi--the salaryman.

No doubt the best thing about this episode was the clever twist it ended with--I see what Forbin meant when he said you don't want to screw with Gantz!

P.S: the W-Dreamers fansub has an intriguingly different take on the lyrics of the OP song. When I listen carefully, I wonder if they might have actually done a better job of interpreting the "Engrish" than ADV did!
[Devil Doll, 2007-02-24]:
More senseless butchering. Kuruno isn't really affected by the loss of Sakuraoka (who died defending him after all!) but mindlessly stalks the original Kishimoto (whom he could have told about her suicide as to prove his knowledge of her story - another chance going to waste). And he avoids to talk to that old woman whom he could at least try to get information from... general stupidity once again (the only intelligent scene of this episode was the two thugs lying about their death). Kuruno's failure to provide information could have been to his advantage given the target of the next hunt but the preview shows that he'll not make use of this advantage either.
