Gantz - 20: Just Shoot Me

Title:Gantz
Episode:20: Just Shoot Me
Synopsis
After Kei's incredible victory over the giant alien, Kato figures that mopping up the remaining ones should be relatively easy. Since time is running short, the hunters split up into two groups. Kei, Kato, Kishimoto and Sakuraoka stumble upon the body of the bum who was beaten to death by the homeless hunters. Kato is especially distraught, and can't help wondering if the "normal" world is any less brutal than the one they are in. Sakuraoka asks Kishimoto if she minds her becoming Kei's girlfriend--she says she doesn't. Hojo leads Sadako and the three remaining newcomers into a gilded shrine full of statues--which begin talking. Hojo orders those without power suits and blasters to stand back, but the judo guy steps forward. "I think we have a challenger!" one of the newbies comments...

I just remembered--what happened to the one newbie who did put on a suit? He didn't get killed in the previous episode, did he? Plus sniper guy is definitely still alive and kicking--kicking alien ass, that is. He reminds me of Nishi, as he lets other people draw the aliens out, then picks them off himself. Anyway, I'd been thinking casualties among the hunters had been relatively light until now--this episode definitely ups the body count. What's surprising is who survives and who doesn't--at least one character who I had thought was invulnerable definitely bites it here. I guess the intent is to demonstrate that nobody is safe, but I can't help feeling that several interesting characters, who were developed at length, have been sold cheaply in exchange for gratuitous violence. Their deaths were neither particularly believable nor touching. At the end, a major character lies critically injured (though any real person would have died instantly from wounds of such a magnitude); surely this person must survive, so it's a matter of figuring out a quick way of taking out the final alien so that they can transport and all wounds will be healed. I'll say one thing--I'm definitely eager to see the next volume! Don't watch the preview, it gives far too much away!

Forbin
They weren't sold cheaply. This was actually part of the Manga. After the homeless hunters vanish, from here until the end of the mission everything matches the manga.

[Devil Doll, 2006-12-17]:
The best episode so far. Finally we see tactical movements, more character interaction (most notably amongst the girls), and important characters ruthlessly being wiped out. The one character (probably) surviving with lethal wounds doesn't bother me too much as this may all be a virtual world of a kind (and who knows how these characters are "beamed" by Gantz anyway?). I was more unhappy about Kato's crying and his wild attack, but that's how he is. (Stupid Kishimoto girl...)
At long last, this series begins to live up a little to the hype being made about it. The scene with the kiss of the dying couple was particularly effectful, and the hunters finally got a worthy opponent. What's more, do we have any proof so far that all hunters will die if they don't fulfill their task in time? The next episode might be the one to find out.
