Title: | Gantz |
Episode: | 14: Goodbye |
Synopsis | |
Tetsuo has smuggled a blaster home with him and feels empowered by it, though everyone else assumes it's a "toy". Kei had hoped that his exploits during the last hunt would impress Kishimoto, but she continues to admire Kato, especially his "caring" side. Kei replies that being "caring" isn't particularly useful during an alien hunt, and she has to agree. Kato arrives at his Aunt's apartment and finds her beating up Ayumu. He loses his temper and she throws both of them out. Kishimoto notices biker girl Sakuraoka at the bookstore. Tetsuo attempts to use his blaster to pay off a debt. Kato and Ayumu move into a cheap apartment. Tetsuo quarrels with his wife, who demands to know where he was last night. Kei and Kishimoto get into an argument and she leaves him. Tetsuo runs into the gang which killed his original self, and is tempted to use his blaster on them. "Why am I doing this?" he asks himself. "Tell me why, Gantz!"... | |

The first thing I noticed about volume seven was that there are Four episodes on this DVD?! ADV must be trying to appease the thoroughly pissed off fans who have had enough of the two episode discs. I don't want to give too much away, but one fairly well developed character won't be coming back for the next hunt. At least it was handled in a fairly poignant manner, unlike the deaths of Nishi or Kayo and Ryota. If this could happen, all bets are off as to the chances any supporting character has of surviving! Surely Sakuraoka will be a recruit for the next mission. Why did an anguished Tetsuo implore Gantz for an explanation to his problems? Gantz wasn't to blame for his getting killed in a gang fight, and the only communication he has had with it has been when it briefed him for a hunt then presented his score afterwards. You may recall that Nishi got angry at Gantz for "ignoring" him, and asked for a display of pictures of everyone who had gotten killed during the hunts, and his request was granted. Nobody else has tried to ask Gantz any questions, which is frustrating. Anyway, for once I think I liked a between-missions episode better than one involving the hunts themselves. [Devil Doll, 2006-11-06] Right when Tetsuo used his brain just once it turns out to be a bad idea. Given these characters of a low average for ethical values, I always wondered why they wouldn't try to use Gantz equipment in the "real" world... at least we've seen some result for this. Despite the unnecessary school fantasy scenes (which are a mere waste of time) I kind of liked this non-hunt episode because the characters finally start to develop. Kato's reaction to the situation at home was long overdue; having the required money available right when he needs it was not that plausible. But the confrontation in Kei's lodge was interesting as well. What still bothers me a lot is that all of these characters are defined merely by their attitude towards violence (well, with the exception of Kei who's defined by his attitude towards horniness). That's a bit too one-dimensional for my taste. |
