'Forgettable, run-of-the-mill' high school student Ken Usato was loaned an umbrella on a rainy day by Student Council president Suzune Inukami and vice-president Kazuki Ryusen, who he would otherwise never dare to approach. While walking home with them the two elite students hear what sounds like bells ringing, but Usato hears nothing. The three are engulfed by a magical circle that appears beneath them, and after losing consciousness awaken in the throne room of King Lloyd of Llinger. The King explains that they have been summoned to serve as heroes who will defend Llinger from a demon lord who threatens it. Sure enough, a test of magical ability shows that Inukami and Ryusen have just what it takes to be heroes, but Usato's test leads to unexplained amazement and consternation among the King and his staff. Usato is abruptly snatched and spirited away by Rose, leader of the Kingdom 'Rescue Team' to become her apprentice.

(Three episodes watched):

No doubt the exceedingly rare and unusual ability that Usato has is healing magic--the premise reminded me of The Rising of the Shield Hero. In general, I was amused and intrigued by episode one. We get to know all three main characters: Usato considers himself throughly average but wouldn't mind living an 'extraordinary and fantastical life' if the chance arose. Even president Inukami finds the experience to be exciting and thrilling, which is about the last way one would expect such a dignified girl to react. Kazuki takes offense at the way the three were snatched to another world without warning, but King Lloyd promises to find a way to send them home once they have accomplished their mission. One thing I didn't like was the plentiful use of superdeformed animation to emphasize their emotions; I have a feeling it all would have worked better without it. The comedy seems kind of overblown. But the plot itself was fun, and again we have gotten to know the main characters fairly well, so I wonder where things will go. Usato has been abducted by Rose, is in the presence of her scary looking, yellow-shirted rescue team (who or what do they 'rescue'?), and is warned that merciless training awaits him. Everything might still fall apart when these things are explained, but so far this had been an entertaining show and I looked forward to more.

I had high expectations for episode two, but I found it to be underwhelming. Basically, nothing unexpected happened. The episode is spent on Usato's merciless training under Rose but we don't really learn much that is new. Are there any twists to the struggle with the Demon Lord, or will it be the usual fare? Likewise, how will healing magic be used? Is there anything about it that we didn't already know? Surely Usato won't just 'fix' Inukami and Kazuki when they get beaten up. We don't really learn anything new about Usato (or Rose) either. There's a fair amount of comedy but it is of unremarkable quality. I had thought that this show seemed unusual, but maybe not.

In episode three Rose sends Usato to kill a giant white grizzly bear as a test of his training. Isn't he supposed to be a healer, not a fighter? But while useful, healing is boring, so like virtually every other anime character who is endowed with some sort of defensive skill Usato finds a way to make it into an offensive one.
