A mysterious force of flying weapons, known as the Xi* is overrunning mainland Asia. Conventional jet fighters are virtually useless against them due to their ability to withstand fantastic G-forces and use some sort of psychological countermeasure against humans. Kei Narutani was fleeing to Japan when he saw a strange, red colored aircraft engage the Xi and, for once, defeat them. Once in Japan he finds himself recruited for an important post within the secret unit which the red plane came from, the 'Independent Composite Air Test Squadron' of the JASDF.

This show never really piqued my interest. Perhaps that's because there wasn't really much that was novel and original about it. We get a mysterious foe (so mysterious that we never really learn much about them except their name and why they are hard to beat), a protagonist who discovers that he has a unique talent, a secret weapon to defeat the enemy, hot girls who serve as pilots of these weapons, a girl the protagonist has known since childhood who will no doubt now be jealous--in general, the usual array of cliches. The whole thing seemed very implausible to me; a guy goes overnight from hapless refugee to indispensable member of an elite military unit (and apparently will get to spend a good deal of time with his own little harem to boot). Kei is given a smattering of a personality--he wants to be independent for the first time, and strike back at the Xi after they killed his mother--but he didn't strike me as all that interesting a person, so I have a hard time caring how his new career will go. Nor did anybody else seem all that interesting. Apparently the (three?) girls who pilot the special jets aren't really girls at all, they are what's known as 'Anima', which are either some sort of augmented super-humans that are needed to handle these super sophisticated planes, or the real-world avatars of the plane's AIs (anyone who knows anything about military aircraft will at least recognize the F-4 Phantom and F-15 Eagle, two American jets that also serve with the JASDF). Though we have barely met them, I don't sense any signs of any sort of serious and interesting friction between them and Kei. Basically, this show seems to be about a guy's wildest dream coming true. But it all seems very unambitious and half-hearted to me. Since I have little idea who the Xi are, I can't worry all that much whether they will be defeated or not. The makers didn't take the trouble to devise a more plausible explanation of how this fantastical situation came about, and I doubt if they will take the trouble to do much with it now that it has.
