Suzu is a quiet and ordinary -- if not a bit of clumsy and daydreaming -- girl growing up in the outskirts of the city of Hiroshima in mid-1930s. She loves drawing sketches with pencils -- a hobby she is really good at. Following her parents' arrangement in 1943, 18-year-old Suzu is married to a young man living in Kure, a neighboring city with a large naval base, in which he works as a civilian secretary for the military tribunal. There she faces a new life, a new family, as well as many new challenges and hardships, particularly with the worsening life conditions due to the Pacific War. Yet Suzu manages to find happiness and peace in her daily life.

Japan has produced a decent number of World War II focused animated films focusing on the tragedy of things in varying aspects from Japan's perspective. In This Corner of the World takes a more slice-of-life approach to explore this historical event through the perspective of Suzu, a young woman who experiences the joys and pains of living in the period from undergoing an arranged marriage to experiencing the final painful moments of the war as she loses family members from air raids and the atomic bomb drop on her home city of Hiroshima. While the film starts off light with exploring everyday moments in Suzu's life, it gradually becomes more serious over time as the war worsens for Japan as such where food becomes rationed, air raids are more frequent, and morale for Japan's citizens worsen. The film does an effective job with gradually progressing through time with these events as Suzu finds herself changing with these experiences, including going through bouts of anger and depression as the reality of the war affects her psyche. The slice-of-life approach to the film may not be for everyone given its more mundane and grounded feeling compared to more heavily dramatic World War II films like Hadashi no Gen or Grave of the Fireflies. But if films like this catch your interest and you're looking for a different direction to them, then In This Corner of the World could catch your interest and is a strong recommendation to watch.
