(Watch+ or Rent-) (All episodes watched): My first impression was that it looks like VVV is sort of like Bleach with guns instead of swords. The first scene was pretty neat, as was the OP sequence (even if my fansub's translation of the song's lyrics didn't make complete sense: "I'm in the hell, I'm in debate, if I were to meet you with firearms"). Still, the opening episode didn't exactly "wow" me; it gives a reasonable explanation of what is going on here, but didn't seem really exceptional or outstanding. Having seen the series as a whole, that impression seems appropriate for VVV in it's entirety. Hunting down supernatural bad guys is fairly common these days, and this show just seemed to lack enough of a "twist" to make it really unique and interesting. There were some modest twists, such as the last-ditch weapon that exists within Sumire, and a certain surprise regarding her boyfriend. But I never really understood the threat that was posed by either the viruses or Lucia's father (or who those second-string villains were). It wasn't until episode four that the basic premise, i.e, how Sumire came to team up with Lucia was explaned, which was frustrating especially since nothing particularly important happened in episode three. Plot elements didn't seem tied together all that well, and I got the feeling that I was expected to have already read the manga. On a sidenote, apparently the manga was contributed by an amateur author to a contest run by a magazine. I do appreciate a touch of silliness instead of 100% gore and horror, and VVV can be credited for that. I have mixed feelings about the conclusion. The death of a major character seemed distinctly unmoving (perhaps because characters in general were never developed all that thoroughly?), then the climactic scene was handled well, what with a neat link to the first episode, but then the ending itself was abrupt and jarring. I'm not sure exactly what happened, or whether I should be feeling happy or sad, but I'll be satisfied that they didn't completely screw it up!
