To my understanding, this OVA is actually the first of three series to adapt story arcs from the Tales of Symphonia RPG video game series. While I've yet to dabble into the source material, it's rather obvious this series is compressing the events of said source material into its 4 half-hour episodes given how rushed it often feels and seemingly covering just the core major events of the game's story, leaving this feeling largely a treat for the fans of the game since they would better follow what is going on here. The visuals for this are competent with polished designs for characters and scenery, and the soundtrack has its moments of having some decent dramatic tracks. But still rather indifferent to this OVA since it largely doesn't do much to explore its story beyond its core events.

Only 1 episode left.

If you played this game before and expect this OVA to be exactly like it, don't bother. Then again, I assumed that myself. However, after viewing the first three episodes, it really makes the game come to life. It's a very good transition from the game into actual story. It seems rushed though it a lot of parts since I have the game myself. Since it's only four episodes, I'm gonna guess that all the climax will be in that last episode. To that, I'm disappointed. A lengthy game like TOS compared to an hour and a half of anime is not a good thing. I believe that if it was at least thirteen episodes, a lot can be covered. I'm leaning towards and early "watch/rent". If the last episode ends in a way that I expect it to, it'll definitely be "watch".

Update: July 11, 2008

I'm pretty unhappy with the ending of the OVA. It's a large cliffhanger and awaits a major void to be filled. Still, it's not a complete waste of time because the story itself is ok (hence me having the actual game and all). To me, incomplete stories and huge gaps for improvement are what this OVA needs. It kills me to see something this good fall completely short and half-assed like it is now. I am just utterly disappointed. If this was going to happen, I wouldn't even have bothered watching it. To cut a good anime and not have anything else to add to me is my disgust in the people involved with this project. Even bad anime has some type of closure. This is reprehensible to me. It's like a slap in face and someone saying, "Enjoy watching because we didn't really care for making any more episodes." I won't say "Avoid" because the story is ok, but if you have a chance to buy or rent, I'd rather you invest in buying a brick and throwingit at all the people responsible for this.
