Ack! Due to an 'rm -rf' with the wrong argument (and reiserfs which makes
rm entirely too fast), I managed to delete most of the images. I've been
able to restore the vast majority of them but recent (November and December)
uploads are likely missing. (On a brighter note, maybe this will finally
get me to get backups working.)

So, I've been working on redesigning the site to allow all kinds of new
features. I'm going to transition to PostgreSQL from MySQL. My current
working document for the database
redesign is online.

Between banging my head against the wall and trying to get OpenACS 4
installed for work, I added a pretty nifty feature. When you view reviews
it now scans for "interesting" words and makes them hyperlinks. Right now
that means it looks for series titles, and the names of notables. It makes
them hyperlinks to their respective pages elsewhere on the site. (At the
time of this writing that's 423 different names it looks for.) The list
that it scans for is updated once every ten minutes, so you won't see it
immediately when you add a new series/notable. I'm open to suggestions as
to other things that should be made automatic links...

I rewrite the whats-new page. It's much better
now. Originally it tried to figure out what had happened by looking at
the timestamps of the records in the database. Not terribly effecient and
even less accurate. A while back (read early 2000) I added started logging
all changes to table. The new whats-new takes advantage of that table to
produce reasonably intellegent reports about what changes have been made by
whom to the system.
It also uses pronouns to refer to the reviewer. This means that it will sound less awkward if we know what your gender is. You can set this by editing your profile.

After many problems during the month of June, the site is stable once again.
It has a new home, now co-located with the company I work for. And a new
server, a nice 1U jobby, with SCSI drives and two and a half times the RAM.
What was broken durin the switch should be fixed now, if you see anything,
tell me!
I even managed to fix the forum, which I hadn't known was broken. It only failed in browsers adhiring closely to the HTTP standard. I was testing using Lynx and an older version of Mozilla, where it worked fine, later versions of Mozilla corrected their problem, which then allowed me to see that the section was broken. At least now I know why no one was posting! Just remember, everything usually looks okay to me, so if you see a problem, I need to know! I probably didn't encounter it with my configuration.
