I've been working on porting the site to Mason (and thus mod_perl). It's an
order of magnitude faster. Progress has been pretty fast and a large
portion of the site is functioning now. Take a look if you like.
I've also been experimenting again with an NNTP backed message board/forum. Thus far all of the interfaces I've tried have been poor, at least for my purposes. So I'll have to write my own. The nice thing about this is that it's a standard back end, so multiple front ends can easily co-exist. And you can always use a news reader, if you prefer.

A bunch of changes today. I added some indexes to the sites tables, which should speed some pages up. I moved the navigation bar to the top, in order to free up space at the left. To the left I added "Best bets", which is a list of the most popular titles. If you view a category it will be limited to the titles in that category.
I improved the "List by Rating" calculation. I'm in the process of adding "Most viewed" and "Most reviewed" boxes to the left hand column...

The site has been a bit unstable yesterday and today. This is somehow related to the launch of TMFFA v5.0, which I host for GenSao. We're still trying to determine what the cause of the problem is. There were a variety of issues that the stressed existing flaws in the server. I think they're all fixed now though.

I tightened up security on the database on my system and inadvertantly
broke reviewer signup. So for a few days now you haven't been able to be
come a reviewer. It should be all fixed now.

Yay! I actually have DSL now, so updates actually have a chance of happening
again.
I updated the look of title listings today. I'm now distinguishing titles with alternating backgrounds colors (right now pale red and pale green), instead of using a spacer between each one. It unarguably makes them easier to read. I'm not sure about the aesthetics of it though...
