(One episode watched):
So, what happened? That was the one question I most wanted an answer to as I watched episode one, but I wasn't getting it. The episode begins with a look at a bustling Japan in the not-too-distant future, then suddenly we shift to a desolate and deserted one. Some hints are dropped: a malfunctioning device announces radiation levels and Mount Fuji seems to have a plume, as if it had become an active volcano again. Yoko mentions that she and Airi were lucky to have 'made it out of the shelter' when they did. Is Airi an android, or has she been fitted with a special device in one of her arms, or what? Didn't the gas station attendant say that Yoko's bike was a rare, outdated internal combustion type before the switch, but now she has an electric one that can be recharged from a portable solar panel she carries. But again, what happened? Is Yoko the only remaining human? She doesn't seem particularly unhappy. She and Airi have a run-in with a disfunctional self-controlled armored vehicle (which has gotten the idea that she must be destroyed because she intruded inside it), but I couldn't really get into that because the question of what had gone wrong with Japan as a whole was bugging me so much. I hope the series as a whole won't be like this, namely small scale adventures with no basic explanation of the apocalypse forthcoming. I noticed that the first episode of even pretty vapid shows often cause me to take a good deal of notes about names, the situation, etc, but here there just wasn't much to record. But I'll definitely be watching episode two.
