Salaryman ga Isekai ni Ittara Shitennou ni Natta Hanashi
(Two episodes watched):
This show turned out to be deeper--more detailed, more sophisticated and more believable--than I had expected, which was a relief, but I am still not certain that it will be deep enough. The solution Uchimura finds to the impasse in negotiations with the Minotaurs (a test he had to pass to be recognized as one of the four top generals in the Demon army) was not all that earth shattering. As almost always, the jokes alone are not funny enough to make viewing worthwhile, so an interesting plot will be needed. The jokes are not so much what characters say as what happens. Who wouldn't want to get some thanks and recognition for their efforts? The Demon Overlord gives Uchimura a lecture on how he must break out of the culture of just keeping quiet and obeying orders which was typical at his job in this world. I was surprised that rather than immediately agreeing, Uchimura had in fact fallen victim to this way of thinking and had to be shaken out of it--though doing that was very easy in the end. It looks like female Demon general Ulmandra (shown above) will be Uchimura's co-star. I decided that what was needed was to watch another episode and see where things would go from here. Episode two, in which Uchimura is sent to negotiate with the ogres, had a couple of surprises, like the bizarre proposal that the Ogre King's daughter made. But nothing much was done to expand on them, and in the end they are little more than a joke. 23 minutes is plenty of time for Uchimura to figure out what ails the Ogre Kingdom and engineer a deal with them that will no doubt fix everything--in other words, this was simplistic and unconvincing. What if Uchimura really had agreed to marry her? That might have been intriguing (if some detail about how such a thing would happen had been gone into), but of course it never actually happens. We learn a few tricks of business negotiation, but not enough to make those lost 23 minutes worthwhile. And Ulmandra is obviously already in love with Uchimura and jealous of any other attractive female who gets near him, which makes her simplistic and unconvincing as well. I think I might as well dispense with this show. the premise has potential but it does not seem to take any of the chances that are needed in order to make it truly noteworthy.
