Will Serfort and his childhood friend Elfaria once vowed that they would both become a Magia Vander, the highest mages in the land. While Elfaria has achieved that goal, Will turned out to have no magical aptitude whatsoever, and is pressured to withdraw from prestigious Rigardin Magical Academy. He manages to earn enough credits to avoid expulsion by studying intensely and hunting down monsters in a dungeon and killing them by purely physical means. But it turns out that while his haughty fellow students look down on him, Will's strength and skill as a warrior are off the charts.

Tsue to Tsurugi no Wistoria
(Two episodes watched):
One of the first things to catch my eye while watching this show were the nice character designs and background art. The premise was pretty familiar, however: The childhood vow to a female friend smacks of Kaijuu #8; and the haughty 2D asshole who harasses Will, Sion Ulster, is likewise nothing unusual. Nor is the credible female student of semi-noble birth who stands up for Will, Colette Loire. Exactly what would distinguish this show from countless other magical academy ones remained unknown through the first half of episode one; the basic setup offers no surprises. Still, I was generally optimistic. Surely Will would find a way to rocket upwards in the rankings of students in this world where "the supremacy of magic is absolute". It turns out that Will need not distinguish himself as a magician because this seemingly skinny boy is in fact an absolutely fantastic swordsman. "In this world of magic, he is the one and only warrior!" his professor exclaims. Basically, he is so good with the sword that it might be said that he employs magic of a different sort. And I noticed at the station break that his sword can somehow deflect magic that is directed against him, so he is by no means at the mercy of magicians. More likely, they will be at his by the time this story is over. But this all felt like a sort of a cop-out somehow; we wanted to know how someone with no magical skills could make his way in a world of magic, and we are basically told that he just uses an alternate form of it (I recall at least one other anime has used this same explanation). With our basic question already answered, I kind of got the feeling that this story is already finished; where will it go from here? But I remained modestly curious and watched another episode. In episode two we learn how Will acquired the sword that he handles so magically. A hostile professor is allowed to give Will a special test to determine whether he should be expelled, and wouldn't you know it, Will manages to pass. But I wasn't detecting anything really novel or intriguing about this show. There are countless anime in which a nice guy is looked down on at a magical academy but uses special powers to win everyone's respect in the end. We have seen it so many times that this show probably could have skipped most of the premise set-up and just gone straight to the real problem that the protagonist must solve. I, for one, would have been grateful if it had done that.
