Birthday Wonderland
While nice to look at visually, Wonderland's main issue is that its storytelling felt largely unfocused throughout its 2-hour run. It seemed like the film was trying to make Akane into a "chosen one" to aid the fantastical realm she and her aunt enter, as well as undergoing character growth to overcome any insecurities she had before her adventure. But while the film does offer gradual character growth for her character, the storytelling doesn't do well at effectively creating any genuine stakes or dangers for its adventure and the film's attempt to establish its major villains with Zan Gu and Doropo were largely underwhelming, especially when revealed who they really are. Plus, it felt like there were points the film added in some scenes of exploring the fantastical world as padding to pad out the runtime, since they contributed little to establishing or advancing any sort of storytelling elements. In short, a rather unfocused and underwhelming film.
