Tiara is an apprentice witch who has enrolled at the famous Flora Girls Academy. She meets her old friend Rosetta ('Rose') there, and is assigned to Rose's 'group' of four (now five) students. But why does everyone seem surprised that she would want to be assigned to this particular group?

(Two episodes watched):

I quickly got the impression that this show was taking the trouble to add some detail to what life in a magical academy and the world around it might be like, whereas many shows with similar themes don't. Except for the possibility of running into 'magical beasts', this is a pretty idyllic world, with no signs of crime, disease or poverty, no doubt because of magic. At the end of episode one we learn what the basic conflict is: Rose's group of students are those with the absolute worst grades and have already been warned that they will be expelled en masse--even including newcomer Tiara--if they flunk another round of tests. So, they need to get their collective acts together. One possible problem, at least for me: I don't see magic as inherently interesting. Just because impossible things somehow happen doesn't necessarily make them intriguing. So, it's too soon to say if the struggle to become good students of magic will be engaging and fun. We get some teasers regarding what's to come: Tiara's sister strongly opposed her enrolling at Flora, and there seems to be some significance to a piece of jewelry she wears. And why was Tiara abruptly assigned to Rose's group when students usually get to choose their group for themselves? Anyway, episode one left me feeling pretty neutral about this show: there didn't seem to be anything seriously wrong with it or anything outstandingly right either. Episode two deals us a surprise about Tiara: she's a princess. But otherwise the tone of the series seemed to be going off in a goofy, nonsensical direction. It is amusing at times, but the bit about the search for a runaway duck was disappointing and made me shake my head. It was easy to predict what was going to happen when several of the girls tried to grab the bird by the edge of a canal (you can probably guess just by reading this). I wish this show would shape up, because the characters are likable and I sort of wonder how they'll turn their grades around, but if episode two is any indicator of what's to come I may drop this one.
