Seiji Nanatsuki had just completed his training to be a police detective when he was caught in a bank robbery while off duty. While he was not entirely brilliant during the affair, his courage catches the attention of the members of Special Crime Investigation Unit 7, which handles unusual cases involving the Elves, Dwarves and Vampires which are integrated into society nowadays.

(One episode watched):

The genre of special units that deal with crimes committed by (or against) fantastical beings that have somehow come to exist in the otherwise fairly ordinary world must be fairly popular, judging from the number of anime of the sort that have appeared. I just can't remember any really good ones. Maybe that's why I got a bad feeling the moment it was revealed that elves, dwarves and vampires would play parts in this show. The attempt to combine perfectly realistic police action with pure fantasy just seems so absurd to me that I can't take it seriously. Some sort of semi-plausible explanation of how these creatures came to exist on earth is needed, but none was forthcoming here. Perhaps the mismatch between the two genres is so extreme that none is possible. Actually (and curiously), the bad guys in episode one seem to be perfectly human, and since we don't get much of an introduction to the non-human members of Unit 7, non-humans hardly play any part in this introductory episode (though I'm betting that Ichinose will turn out to be a vampire or something). Another thing I could not take seriously was the girl who is literally faster than (numerous) speeding bullets, and can deflect them with a sword. Have the laws of physics from some alternate reality taken hold here on earth? The first case that is solved--the bank robbery--and the trick Ichinose used to figure it out didn't seem all that intriguing. The Unit 7 crew seem pretty stereotypical--the suave, stylish unit commander, the anti-hero Ichinose, the absolutely self-confident swordswoman, the gruff sniper, the teenage hacker, and, of course, the inexperienced but determined newcomer. Seiji doesn't rub me the wrong way, and wants to be a detective because he was once saved by one, but that, again, is kind of stereotypical. I felt kind of bored by episode one and wished it would hurry up and be over. Perhaps the question is, would this premise work if you removed all the non-humans from it? If not, all the elves, dwarves and vampires in the world probably won't save it. Maybe what would save it would be if the non-human characters had original, convincing and deep personalities, and, above all, unusual, fascinating problems brought about by their races--problems a human wouldn't have to deal with. I can't think of any show in this genre which has really stretched the envelope to that extent; and maybe that's why I am so skeptical of yet another one. I declined to watch any more.
