Apparently this is the latest incarnation of a popular character who has already been the subject of a long running manga and at least one previous anime. And apparently each of the twelve episodes in this show had different directors, artists and VAs, leading to different interpretations that vary by a good deal. Personally, I had never heard of Ekoda-chan, but found episode one to be an amusing short. It might have gotten tiresome if it had been a full 23 minutes long, being composed largely of adaptations of 4-koma type jokes, but the three-and-a-half minute short worked out nicely. As you can see, the artwork was crude but has a distinctive style (and again no two episodes have identical styles). Indeed, with the different drawing style and the different voices, I was unsure at first if episode two was even about the same person as episode one. Also, it seemed that this episode wasn't trying to be funny so much as teach us a little lesson. Each episode can go one way or the other: some try to be moving or touching while others just try to be funny. Episode nine, about Ekoda-chan working at an insurance company and taking phone calls from policy holders, was kind of fun. What is odd about all episodes is that they include a lengthy interview with their directors and VAs with last far longer than the short itself. The animation is a mere 3 minutes or so, but the total length is around 25 minutes. It was kind of informative but a 3 minute short doesn't exactly justify 20+ minutes of commentary, and starting with episode two I just watched the shorts themselves and skipped the interviews. The bit in episode one where we watch the artist draw a frame was sort of fun. One truly bizarre episode which caught my attention was number ten, which basically consists of five marionettes singing a song together. That one was intriguing enough that I did watch some of the commentary. The final episode made little sense to me and with that the series was over. In general, this show was not brilliant but was still worth watching.
