'Painfully boring' is a term that I use to describe shows which are so tiresome, draw so little interest from me, that miss the mark of being a fairly entertaining show by such a large degree, that I can only drop my jaw and wonder what the hell happened during the making of it. Were they making a conscious effort to keep the show as uninteresting as they possibly could? It's almost inexplicable. Sansha Sanyou was such a show. I found it to be extremely unfunny--the gag about Yoko giving off a bright light was the only one that came anywhere near making me laugh. How did this happen? Maybe for some reason it's difficult to find lines spoken by totally uninteresting characters to be funny. Maybe you have to like a character before you can find his/her lines amusing. These characters have very shallow personalities; several times someone's eyes would go into super-simplified, 'shocked' mode (just a white circle, basically), and I was obviously supposed to be laughing at that point, but I wasn't. This show is painful to watch; it doesn't employ any sleazy tactics, like fanservice, yet it manages to fall so incredibly flat that I can't explain it. It falls into the same trap as countless other anime, namely, not very funny and no sign of an interesting longterm plot either. It would basically be like reading below-average newspaper comics for 23 minutes. Would other people find it as boring as I do? I don't know. There was one novel concept--whereas virtually every other comedy anime manages to include a rich girl in the cast, SS has a no-longer-rich one. This has potential. But SS just seems so incredibly shallow that I can't believe that anything will ever be done with the opportunity. I quit around the halfway mark. Maybe we need some scientific research into what exactly boredom is and how it happens.
