Aoba lives on Hekishima, a small island to the southwest of the main islands of Japan. He lives with his grandmother Tae while working part time at a junk shop. The popular pastimes on the island are the ongoing turf war called "Libstease" and an online game set in the virtual world of "Rhyme." Aoba isn't involved in either, preferring to live peacefully, until one day he is forced into a Rhyme battle.

(One episode watched):

I was feeling distinctly bored with the first half of this show's first episode. Perhaps that's because while I was getting a mix of annoying children and the usual colorful bishoujo guys, I wasn't getting much else. Who gets murdered? What's with that giant dome that's as big as the town itself? Is this Japan in the future, or some alternate reality? It wasn't until the second half of the episode that we learn about Rhyme, a virtual fighting game which rumor has it is doing weird stuff to those who take part. That might be interesting, but if so, not yet. We get very little detail, which is frustrating, and, again, boring. All the guys seem super cool, and therefore virtually identical and the same. Only their outfits and hair colors distinguish them. What happens once Aoba is drawn into Rhyme was so crazy that I fear that trying to make sense of it will break my brain. And, given the lack of interest which episode one has inspired within me, I'll get very little in exchange. It's frustrating, because trouble in virtual reality has the potential to be an intriguing theme which can be mined repeatedly for numerous neat shows (like SAO). But I'm having a hard time believing that DMD will be one of them.
