(Two episodes watched):

I had high hopes for this show--one or more modern day girls winding up in medieval Japan sounded like a recipe for great fun. But alas, the actual show was sorely disappointing. First of all, Hideyoshi is way too dim. At the end of the first episode, after witnessing some sort of magical transformation, then an incredible display of mystical swordsmanship, and finding herself in a strange place that she has no memory of travelling to, it has yet to dawn on her that something funny is going on. Her naivete is more painful than amusing. In fact, hardly anything was amusing about this first episode--I cannot remember even cracking a smile. There doesn't seem to be a lick of wit anywhere within this show. Furthermore, there is no explanation at all (except 'magic') of how the time travel came about. The characters have such simplistic personalities and motivations that I don't give a damn about any of them. This show seems so dull, so two-dimensional, that it is painful to watch. It's pretty safe to say that a show has problems when afterwards I feel that if the makers had allowed me to do a rewrite, it would have turned out much better.

After two episodes, there has still been no explanation of how time travel came about, why women have replaced men in pivotal historic roles, or even why a talking dog exists--and there doesn't seem to be any hint that any explanation ever will be presented to us. I fear that we are supposed to swallow these incongruities without a second thought; just shut up and laugh at our (meagre) jokes, oogle the (usual) shapely women, and be thrilled by the (unexceptional) swordplay. I hope I am wrong, because that would be a pretty pathetic way for an anime to die. But Battle Girls has missed its chance to grab my interest, and I have better things to do with my time.
