This Cobra OVA features the return of the Pirate Guild, whom Cobra crosses paths with when they try to uncover the secrets of trying to create a galaxy and Cobra's old nemesis from the guild, Crystal Boy, returns for this series. It's a decent adventure in its own right as Cobra tries unraveling the Pirate Guild's motives with wanting "girl of the arc" Utopia More and deals with the personal grudge he has with Crystal Boy from the events of the Royal Sisters arc depicted from the 80s anime. Crystal Boy is rendered in CG animation for this OVA series where while it makes him look better compared to his 80s design, the CG rendering sticks out prominently compared to the regular cel-shaded animation and his facial designs lack the range of expression that his 80s counterpart had during points in the 80s anime. Still if you are a Space Adventure Cobra fan, this is still yet another solid and engaging watch for the franchise.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:1998#628]
(One episode watched):

I had read some snippets about the beloved manga/anime character Cobra, and was eager to see the recent remakes. My expectations were high, and the OP sequence gave me a good feel, but I found this to be sorely disappointing. One thing that was quite obvious was that the music wasn't doing a very good job of generating excitement. The show just had a sort of cheap feeling to it, as if the project hadn't been taken seriously by it's crew. There wasn't enough wit; Cobra definitely needed a lot more of it, since his wisecracks seemed more annoying than clever. Jokes were mediocre and thinly spread. There was a definite kinkiness to this show, with lots of thinly dressed sexy women--that was pretty much as I'd expected. Violence seemed to be dispensed in a rather carefree manner; a news report mentions "182 dead and 78 injured" in the incident which takes up most of the first episode. The gratuitous violence kind of cancels out what little wit Cobra has. There was a strange mix of highly detailed, three-dimensional CG robots and androids along with conventional animation. All-in-all, this didn't leave me particularly intrigued by the mystery or eager to continue watching. I dropped Cobra after another episode or two.
