Well, I didn’t like the previous Poly-Wanna-Be-Interesting series, so this ‘reinterpretation’ automatically starts off with a BLACK MARK against it. The beginning of both stories is the same. A buxom fairy enters into a contract with a young orphaned dantist, but then she leaves and he never sees her again. Some twelve years later, Phoron is attending a dantist music academy and is troubled by his inability to complete his 2nd year requirements. To graduate to the 3rd year, he must musically summon and enter into a contract with a fairy, but all of his attempts have failed. It is only when he sets aside his ‘magically enhanced musical instrument’ and begins to sing a solo latin ↗chant (La Luna) does a voice speak to him. Corticarte, the fairy that Phoron met long ago has been sealed in basement of the academy and the ‘music of his voice’ has given her the power to free herself and so, she rushes to his side. Phoron is surprised to learn that the effects of being locked away so long have stifled her magic powers and caused her to transform from her full-figure buxom fairy 'woman' into a short flat-chested lolicon girl. But she still has the sassy and brassy attitude of a hundreds-of-years-old fairy (in short, a classic ↗tsundere character.) The story seems to be a bit better in this ‘version’. The focus is more on the relationship between a doubting dantist and his fairy girl in a school setting. The fairy girl is younger than in the previous, but otherwise the story is ‘basically the same’. And I have not seen Phoron’s tricked out musical magical motorbike …. (and I hope that I won’t!!!!!) As I watched episode one of Symphonia Polyphonica, I was thinking, ah, wonderful, another magical academy series; at least with the slightly different touch that magic is employed musically. A destructive entity appearing on campus, and the protagonist finding himself facing off with it, seemed highly predictable at first. If this fellow had discovered awesome hidden powers and thoroughly demolished an evil opponent, then this show would have had very little of note going for it; but replacing a faceless enemy with a nude girl is generally preferable! Somehow the chemistry reminds me of Spice and Wolf. I have little idea where this will go--the first episode didn't reveal as much as our synopsis does--but I'm modestly intrigued and game for at least one more episode. I pray that the first one wasn't just a fluke and it will have at least a little significant originality. Last updated Monday, April 27 2009. Created Monday, April 27 2009. |
