Before I begin... Both animes where astounding works of art! That being said....
I want to vent a little on who thought kanon 2006 was better or worse than Clannad. If there are people who think Clannad was better, i'll start a new topic to better deal with those comments, but for those who think (or KNOW is what i would prefer to say) Kanon was superior, please enlighten me!
Why is it that beautiful masterpieces always have to end so suddenly with a one-shot season, while well done animes (though still a masterpiece in its own right) gets to have movies here, additional seasons there, and a much more "Grand" of a presence? i would like to assume funds are not the only reason. Without doing any research on the two titles, one would suggest Kanon deserves a sequel more than Clannad ever will, one could suggest Kanon should have seperate character arc OVAs instead of that disaster of an OVA we were fed through Clannad, and one may suggest that Clannad was a way for Visual art's/KEY to relax their minds after having such a powerful story presented to us as with AIR and Kanon.
Thats more than a little venting im sure, but it just makes me so angry as this pattern has been going on for years now!

Clannad is getting a sequel because they needed something to fill because Haruhi Suzamiya Season 2 was cancelled. Kanon was finished as a story line, Clannad wasn't. So to fill in a whole season they decided to make Clannad.
That's about it. There is not 'conspiracy' or 'pattern' going on here. They wanted to do Haruhi S2, but it wasn't to be. So continue a series that everyone is familiar with or try to start up another series that didn't have a continuation. Easy enough answer.
Also Kanon is the ONLY anime to have 2 versions that cover the EXACT SAME STORY. That is a feat in itself. Also Kanon ends with Ayu's story officially. Clannad does not end with Nagisa. So why not make something that has a plot already written instead of faking up something that doesn't exist with Kanon?
Oh and I agree that the Clannad OVA was a piece of crap. Tomoya's story should've been at least 4 episodes long, but the part where Tomoyo DIES at the end of her story was a bit more than everyone wanted to see.

I realized what i wrote but it was already to late i guess. i wanted to say leave the video game adaptation excuse out of this but i suppose thats impossible right? if you put it like that Forbin than it is somewhat about funding because it is very possible and apprieciated when they "fake up" stories to keep the anime going and/or give an anime one last bang before the close of a series. There are to many animes to count that have done this already so why can't Kanon do it over Clannad? Its not impossible. Also, the "pattern" part i mentioned still stands because there are many animes that just die off when we all know that the story could continue if the funding was there or just plain if they wanted them to. i know even u would love to see some of your favorite titles brought back bigger and better than before if you had the chance. i never said anything about any conspiracies up there but since it all comes down to the ALL MIGHTY DOLLAR rather than pure storytelling anyway, i guess conspirarcies aren't completely out of the question.

Sorry to interject here, but I didn't want to start a whole new forum for a quick question: Forbin, where did you hear Haruhi Suzumiya 2 has been cancelled? Has it been completely cancelled (it will never happen), or is it just not going to be ready in time for the time slot it was originally planned for?

It was mentioned in ANN that H2 was delayed because the director did not feel the script was up to par.
That is scary in itself that KyoAni will not release a crappy anime and will force a good product to be delivered. Most Animation studios release whether it is crap or not.

And ANN just mentioned 'Kyoto Animation is also slated to work on a new Haruhi Suzumiya anime.' (ANN source here)
So it sounds like H2 is still in development and has not been outright cancelled ....

Wasn't there a short OAV made on another Key/ Visual Arts title made before the 2002 version of Kanon? Enough people talk of Kanon, Air, and Clannad from Key. But, I don't hear much about any of their other works.
Based off what I found on ANN, Clannad: After Story will premiere on October 2. (Source: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=9701)

for Ggultra,
Key only has 2 other works left, Plantarian (About a man who repairs a girl robot tour guide), and Little Busters, about a group of friends who want to make a baseball team.
And of course, since it is Key, someone has to die.
