Title: | Read or Die - TV |
Episode: | 25: It's Not A Big Problem |
Synopsis | |
The President of the US realizes Joker has decieved him, and threatens to take military action. "Feel free to come by land, sea, or air" an unpreturbed Joker casually replies. American planes and ships prove no match for the fantastic weapons Joker can summon from famous Sci-fi novels. In a London which seems to have gone back in time, the three sisters meet Yomiko, Drake and Nancy, and discuss what course of action they should take. Yomiko has noticed that pre-1890 landmarks have remained unchanged, unlike the rest of the city. She reasons that if they can find anyone who is clearly out of place in this time period, that person must be working for Joker and the British Library. With a week to go before the crucial announcement, they decide the best way to identify what's right and what's wrong would be by reading, since that was the primary means of mass communication in the 19th century. The girls read voraciously for five days, until Yomiko notices that a famous building has somehow been moved since their arrival. Though they are not affected, the passage of time has somehow been accelerated in this strange city--only Mr. Gentlemen could do something like this. Joker has a problem as well; because the durability of the books has suffered more than expected, "rebooting" will be impossible and his operation must succeed on the first try. He sees little cause for concern; "Who else on earth could carry out such a preposterous, great, and incredible plan?". Joker visits Nenene in her cell, and reveals that contrary to what she had expected, the books in fact contain only a small fraction of Gentlemen's wisdom. The remainder, he says, is diffused within the air itself--"That is to say his wisdom exists everywhere". In two days the network of antennas which have been constructed around the world will collect it and transmit it to London, where it will be implanted into Junior, "the new Gentlemen". Junior/Gentlemen will then make a momentous announcement--"That's all it takes to format the brains of people, so that they can share the same values and a future under the same ideas". Joker claims that all famous writers met Gentlemen during their lifetimes, and as a result were inspired by him to new heights of literary greatness. He would like Nenene to likewise meet Gentlemen, then write "a book of enlightenment to spread his greatness". Meanwhile, Yomiko and the sisters spot a subway station that shouldn't exist yet... | |

Ah, so it was supposed to be preposterous--I wasn't the only one thinking that was the case! Surely SPECTRE would be jealous that somebody else had come up with this plan for world domination! I wish I knew just how seriously I should be taking this show, as it nears it's conclusion. Still, I'm trembling with anticipation as I near the final episode: will it be brilliant, preposterous--or both? I found the tactic the group of heroines (and Drake) used to be pleasantly silly: What do you do when you desperately need to find out what's really going on in a strange place? You read, of course! The US Navy tends to take a serious beating in anime as a method of demonstrating just how powerful and dangerous enemy powers are--you see the same in Evangelion, Magic Users Club, and Blue Seed Return. Forbin This continues from what you learned in the last episode.
