Title:Read or Die - TV
Episode:21: D.O.D. --Dream Or Die--
Synopsis
Yomiko and Anita are back in Tokyo after witnessing the explosion of the helicopter which had been carrying Michelle, Maggie, Nenene, Nancy, Drake and Junior. After watching the construction underway on the site of the demolished Jinbo district, Yomiko follows a familiar cat down into a stormdrain and is delighted to find "Toto Books Makeshift Store #2" open for business. This literally underground bookstore is now the last of it's kind in Jinbo-cho. At his original location, "They took all the books I had and destroyed the store" the owner laments. The police did nothing and the same thing is happening all over the world. It seems that bookstores are being replaced by "The Permanent Library For Mankind", which is to have 118 branches around the world. What's being built above ground is a transmission center for "an ideal system which unifies and controls all information and distributes it equally to everybody". The owner offers to give Yomiko all the books he has saved if she can take back Jinbo street. Anita is back at school, where Wendy appears and asks her how she's adjusting to the new system. Anita is on guard, but Wendy isn't particularly threatening. Wendy asks what happened to the BotASE, and Anita tells her it burned along with the crashed helicopter. Wendy would like to collect samples of Anita's body cells and blood, but nothing more. "Then we'll give you a new past, family and friends. Of course your previous memories will be erased". She says a child of her age can't survive on it's own, and tells her to decide whether she wants to "keep dreaming or die". Afterwards, Wendy reports to Joker that the BotASE should be amid the wreckage of the helicopter. He tells her to keep Anita under surveilance, though she probably won't be needed as a candidate for Mr. Gentlemen. Joker is informed that there's evidence that Junior's apparent death in the helicopter may be a deception. Meanwhile, the thought occurs to Anita that losing her memory would deprive her of her friendship with Hisami. She promises her that she'll try to return, then dashes from the classroom. Back at the apartment, she finds Yomiko in tears over a photo of herself and Nenene. "I can't forgive you", Anita says, "but there are people I can't forgive even more than you. I'll team up with you again until we beat them"...
Comments
I thought Hisami's memory had been wiped when Anita met her again at the end of the last episode, but she didn't recognize her--yet all seems back to normal now. So normal, in fact, that at the start of this episode, I wondered if Anita's memory had already been removed (why had she gone back to school as if nothing had happened?). Clearly, Anita has met Wendy, and maybe Joker, before. Was she keeping it a secret from her sisters, or didn't she remember until seeing Junior's hologram of herself at the British Library fire? The fate of the helicopter passengers was no big surprise. What did Yomiko and Anita expect to achieve by attacking the under construction transmission center at Jinbo? Would it have been the keystone of the Permanent Library For mankind network?
