Juuni Kokuki - 5: [SPOILER] Story plausibility flaw: The Blue Gem

Title:Juuni Kokuki
Episode:5: [SPOILER] Story plausibility flaw: The Blue Gem
Synopsis
During the events of episode 3, the scabbard of Nakajima's magic sword gets buried beneath a cart which has toppled over when the visitors are attacked by wolf demons. Before leaving the location of this event, Nakajima cuts the blue gem off of the scabbard with her magic sword and takes both gem and sword with her, leaving the unmovable scabbard behind. (Had the gem remained there together with the scabbard the following events wouldn't cause a problem, but so...)
Later in this episode, Nakajima uses the blue gem to heal the knee wound of her classmate Sugimoto.

In episode 5 Sugimoto attacks Nakajima and injures her on her right hand. But instead of killing her enemy, Sugimoto leaves Nakajima behind because "she can't fight anymore and will surely become the prey of wild beasts". (Note that the blue gem is still there and Sugimoto knows its effect first-hand!) Later in episode 5, Nakajima wraps a cloth around her hand (instead of healing her wound using the blue gem!) and even climbs down a dangerous cliff with her injured hand.

At the beginning of episode 6, Nakajima awakes in the rat's house and we clearly see both her sword and the blue gem lying next to her. During the events of episode 6, Nakajima wrestles with her own doubts and fears manifested by her magic sword (which Nakajima can't control yet because the scabbard is missing).

In episode 7 Nakajima finally manages to overcome the paranoia her sword wanted her to have, and in this very moment the scabbard manifests near her location (without the blue gem that was in her possession all the time!).

The events described above raise an important question: Why did neither Nakajima nor Sugimoto remember the effect of the blue gem? Nakajima should have used it to heal her wound before climbing down the cliff - but more importantly, Sugimoto should not have left Nakajima alive (and the story should have ended in episode 5 right away, ouch!).
