Juusou Kikou Dancouga Nova - 4: The Red Dancouga

Title:Juusou Kikou Dancouga Nova
Episode:4: The Red Dancouga
Synopsis
Kurara recieves a strange delivery late at night. Later, having been roped into talking with team counselor Ruuriruri, she relates a wild account of her family background--Ruuriruri doesn't buy it. The others are exercising in the gym when a TV news report on their last action airs. Reporter Isabelle Cronkite argues that Dancouga only prolongs wars that would end if it didn't intervene, which makes the pilots uncomfortable. Afterwards, Johnny recognizes the actress on a TV commercial. Meanwhile, Kurara gives Ruuriruri a more honest account of why she became a police narcotics agent. Their talk is interupted by the alarm summoning the pilots for a new mission. En route they are informed that their destination is the Amazon River region of South America. Meanwhile, Cronkite begs to be sent to the same region, since she has a hunch that Dancouga will appear there next; her wish is granted. The crew of Dancouga spot the Ameria battleship Deiga afloat on the river, preparing to shell the village of an unfriendly tribe. Everyone prepares for a by-the-book operation--until Aoi spots something unexpected...

I took a break from watching this episode at the station break, and returned in a not altogether good mood after a frustrating task. Almost immediately, however, I found myself smirking again--that's the sort of show this is. I wasn't laughing at the show, mind you, I was laughing with it. Everybody needs a little giant robot now and then (complete with lines like "Super Beast Divine Combination!") to please the little kid in them. Best of all, however, is the way this show is able to make fun of itself. The native costumes were laughable--if this show tried to take itself completely serious it would be a mess, but fortunately it doesn't. This episode features a thinly veiled jab at US foreign policy. "In the 21st century" Isabelle Cronkite explains, "Ameria (yes, without the letter C) invaded the Middle East, using a war on terrorism as a cover to dominate the world's oil sources. But in the end, they just spread terrorism throughout the world". The sad thing is, she may be right!
