Maomao is the freckled daughter of an apothecary. She was kidnapped and wound up as a lowly laundry girl in the 'Rear Palace', a subdivision of China's Forbidden City in which the Emperor's concubines live. The Emperor himself and Eunuchs (castrated government officials) are the only men allowed. Infant children of the Emperor have been falling ill and dying lately, and being experienced as an apothecary Maomao knows why. After a tip she provides saves a daughter of the concubine Gyokujou, she is promoted to Gyokujou's Lady-in-Waiting. |
