(Four episodes watched):

Basically, my impression was that all of episode one is needed to set up the basic premise so the story has barely begun and I was left still unsure whether it would be very good. As I understand it, Tsugaru will be slowly but surely devoured by an 'Oni' if nothing is done, and Aya will show him how to avoid that fate if he helps her find the European man who decapitated her (it turns out that this same person 'captured' him, so he has a grievance against him as well). It was hard to make sense of this Oni business--like, what exactly are they, and what can they do, and so forth. I was confused by the argument between Tsugaru and Aya over which of them wants to die (the most?). Even after an episode-long explanation of the premise, I still feel that we don't know either of these main characters very well. So, I guess I will watch episode two since this might be unusual and fun, but as of yet I am not convinced to fully commit myself to it.

As I watched episode two the thought occured to me, did I miss an episode? Tsugaru and Rindo are already in Europe and are already fairly well known detectives who specialize in cases that involve monsters. They've already solved difficult cases in Norway and Belgium. But I checked and this was indeed episode two. How will this help lift Tsugaru's curse or get Rindo's body back or punish whoever took it? When vampires appeared I rolled my eyes, thinking that this show was getting formulaic. But the mystery behind this murder case turned out to be interesting and I wonder what the solution will be. I guess episode one really was a sort of prequel and the real plot is just beginning here, especially after reading the ANN synopsis above.

At the end of episode three it sounds like Rindo has already figured out who killed Hannah, the wife of vampire aristocrat Lord Godard, though she has not yet revealed her conclusions. This suggests that the series will consist of a series of different and relatively short cases rather than one long and complex one. Still no progress solving the basic problem of who decapitated her and cursed Tsugaru; maybe that happened just to create this odd team that will solve strange cases, and their problems never will be resolved. Whether the solution to Hannah's case makes sense and is truly intriguing may well determine whether the show as a whole is really worth watching, though I have enjoyed it so far. Not a whole lot of evidence had been produced at this point and I had no idea who the culprit might be.

Rindo explains her reasoning in depth and reveals her conclusion in episode four. She's correct, and Tsugaru must subdue the culprit, which gives us a look at just what he's capable of, which was exciting and cathartic. On the other hand, the killer's motivations didn't make a whole lot of sense to me; wouldn't it have made more sense to kill Lord Godard himself? Also, the tactic used to commit the murder came from an old Agatha Christie novel (IIRC). I notice that a number of characters from other works of literature/anime are going to show up, like Sherlock Holmes and Arsene Lupin; is that good news or bad? When the premise of the second arc is laid out early in episode four--Lupin has boasted that he will steal some valuable object from the manor of Phineas Fogg (protagonist in Jules Verne's Around The World In 80 Days), I decided that this felt like a mash-up of other peoples' works and I didn't want to watch it.
