While scrolling through lots of anime texts I found that a number of anime have a setting outside Japan, and even outside Asia.

Would it make sense to form a group of these (by creating some Category keyword) to tag anime that contain little (or even none) "Japanese" elements by playing in an environment that's possibly more "compatible" to a western target group (i. e. the "non-otaku" audience)?

The requirement should be that the anime completely plays in a western country, not just some episodes. Currently I'm not even sure how many anime this would be; a quick search gave me: Gunslinger Girl (Italy), Howl's Moving Castle (fictional France), Meine Liebe (fictional German), Fullmetal Alchemist (Germany?), Count and Fairy (England), Emma (England), Kigeki (Ireland), First Squad (Russia/Germany WW2), A Wind named Amnesia (post-apocalyptic America).

I always liked the word ↗Occidental to refer to western countries - It really confuses the dickens out of everyone......

I'm fine with whatever wording the category will get (if we feel that it should actually be created, that is).

Hummm.... we had a keyword of "western' a while ago... Western as in wild west, horses and guns with a cowboy theme, but it had less than five titles associated with it and was 'phased out'.

What kind of term might best describe non-Japanese themed anime series? Let me think about it.

I'm perfectly fine with "Occidental" (the descriptive text of the category would get the Wikipedia link). I'm more in doubt how many visitors would actively search for "occidental anime" (which is what a category would support).

It's all about the visitor isn't it? The trouble we go through for them...

Makes one wonder sometimes...

I don't see it as "trouble", I rather ponder about what could possibly be the aspects that some anime fans consider essential about their liking anime. And these would be what they are looking for, so a decent database might want to support these "ways of looking". So in the end this is also about understanding anime better, which for me is worth the effort.

DD's original suggestion of 'Western/European' is both all inclusive and descriptive and probably meets all criteria for clarity of thought....
