(Six episodes watched):

Apparently in some sort of utopian parallel universe an attempt was made to steal the notes to the 'melody of happiness', a magical song that somehow safeguards peace and joy there. But instead of being stolen the notes got scattered, some of them winding up here on earth. A cute little talking cat, 'Hummy', comes here to search for them, and the bad guys are searching too. Two quarrelsome Japanese teenagers, Hibiki and Kanade, find themselves drafted to serve as magic girls and assist the kitty. And that's about as far as episode one goes. I actually kind of liked Suite Precure. I got a couple decent laughs out of it; it is just crazy enough to amuse me yet still make sense. The two girls have been given a distinctive personality trait, namely their love/hate relationship as former childhood friends who nowadays cannot help arguing. Already I hope they will make up with each other. Stereotypical elements of Mahou Shojo anime are abundant, but there is enough wackiness that I didn't feel bored--in fact, the episode seemed to go surprisingly quickly. I think I will take the trouble to download and convert some more of Suite Precure.

Just the OP sequence, which reminds me of all the goofy touches from episode one, had me smirking (the ED sequence features a sort of CG Idol act). There's no need for much pausing to read subtitles here, as the plot of Suite Precure is pretty simple. Fortunately, it doesn't take itself very seriously, which was definitely a good move. The source of Hibiki and Kanade's long quarrel is shown to have been a simple misunderstanding; I hope they will continue to argue, however, because otherwise they would have two-dimensional personalities. There are amusing touches to this series, but once we get beyond the bizarre premise the plot is simplistic and predictable. Typically, a new manifestation of the evil monster "Negatone" appears, attempting to steal a note, but Hibiki and Kanade overcome an disagreement to cooperatively kick it's ass. Fortunately, this show is only thirteen episodes long, so this repetitiveness may not be too much of a problem. It is clear who will win and that the two girls are never really in any danger. But the show is too cute and silly to hate, anyway; the evil cat/girl 'Siren' amuses me. I hope Hibiki and Kanade wind up back in Major Land sooner or later.

Episode six was typical of the mode this show has gone into: The first half was fairly fresh and amusing, while the second half consisted of the usual fight with Negatone (and the usual lengthy transformation scene), which were distinctly boring. The corny moral to the story didn't impress me either. However, changes in the OP sequence suggest that an army of new characters lies ahead, which is cause for optimism. But we are halfway through the series and as of yet there is no sign of any longterm plot developing.
