The distinctive character designs quickly confirmed that this is indeed a continuation of Code-E. The snazzy OP sequence brings a distinct grin to my face, and the series as a whole again reminded me of ROD. That is, a mild-mannered girl has attained fantastic and unusual powers. Seeing Chinami performing in her flashy outfit was both amusing and thrilling; she's come a long way. While she's considerably more courageous and assertive than she used to be, the role of ass kicker in her two-person team falls to Mao-chan, another Type E. Mao, a mysterious, dangerous, yet strangely reserved girl, is a fun character who it seems will undergo some development. Mission E seems more outlandish and stylish than the original series, which is encouraging since I wasn't altogether thrilled by that one. I wonder if certain characters from that series will carry over to this one. I found the first episode to be moderately entertaining; besides seeing the "new" Chinami we learn about her comrades within the OZ organization and it's purpose. It's also fairly amusing. The question is, how much creativity and originality will this show have in store? This one seems to have crossed the line from the restrained, almost silly original series into more of a superheroic one. This might make it better, or it might compare poorly to the shows that already exist in this new category. It's too soon to tell.

The opening scene of episode three shows Adol Brinberg, that blond foreign guy who, along with his sister, posed a sort of goofy threat in the original series. I was disappointed with the fight scene at the end of the episode. I always say that one or two respectable opponents makes an infinitely greater thrill than an army of Keystone Cops. Still, I'm enjoying this show more than I recall enjoying the original Code-E. The "coolness" seems to be wearing off as of episode four. Fight scenes are unimpressive and what the bad guys are up to is unclear. I'm hard pressed to define any major change that has taken place since the first episode--this seems to have more of a villain-of-the-week sort of plot. Again, it is Mao who keeps me interested, plus a few decent jokes now and then.

Episode eight was surprisingly fun, however. Mao has become disenchanted with OZ, and runs into Adol, who takes her on a sort of psuedo-date. Not only was it amusing in the short term, but a hint of danger in the long run (the long term series plot) emerges. Adol has become very angry over what happened to his sister, and blames Chinami. At times in this series, his personality had changed so much since Code-E that I didn't recognize him. I don't know if this will "work" or not, but I'm modestly curious to see.
