Koi Kaze - 6: Autumnal Melancholy

Title:Koi Kaze
Episode:6: Autumnal Melancholy
Synopsis

As a fall school festival approaches, Nanoka reflects on some dishes she prepared and wants to prepare. She wants to become closer to her brother despite the fact that he can be very unfriendly and grumpy at time. She feels that he does have good points. As she reflects, male schoolmate Miyauchi-kun comes to help her carry some boxes to a class. They make small talk as she walks behind him through the halls. She figures to invite her oniichan to the festival, though she doesn't know his days off. Miyauchi thinks that the rumors of her having a brocon (brother complex) are true which catches her completely off guard. He tells her that he overheard Tamaki say something about it. Nanoka is a bit upset, stating that Tamaki-chan and Futaba-chan often tease her, but asks if going to the movies or shopping with her oniichan is unusual. Miyauichi tells her not to worry about the rumors.

Meanwhile, Koushiro is at work and reflecting that the guilt he felt over what he'd done has lessened over time. He begins to wonder if "meditating" to his sister is really so strange. His female boss begins saying "imoutou" (little sister) several times before waiving a flyer in front of his face for a party about meeting folks like your brother/sister. Naturally, it was created by Odagiri who's still looking for any chance to hook up with a high school girl. Their boss decides to tease Koushiro about this, saying how nice it was of him to take his sister out on a date and how she'd like a brother to take out and go for a walk with. She continues to tease and casually mentions the possibility of Nanoka having a boyfriend, something which takes Koushiro off guard.

On the train ride and walk home, Koushiro reflects on this. He spots Nanoka walking home with Miyauchi and talking about their older siblings. They eventually encounter Koushiro and Nanoka makes the introductions. Miyauchi leaves Nanoka with her brother and as he does, she mentions to Koushiro that it is rude not to introduce himself back. In response, Koushiro roughly grabs Nanoka's arm and rapidly leads her away even though it hurts him. When they reach the house, he's angry and stating that she's too young to date boys. She tries to explain that he was just being nice, but Koushiro isn't buying it. They argue at the gate and in one of his rebutals, he mentions that she is cute. She's taken aback by this and having said the remark causes Koushiro to lose his anger and be flustered. Their dad opens the front door wondering what the fuss is about as Nanoka races past him to her room.

In her room, she wonders what was up with Koushiro as her faced gets somewhat flushed and she lightly caresses her wrist where he'd grabbed her. Koushiro is angry again and storms upstairs to his own room.

The next day, Koushiro comes down and learns that Nanoka has already left for school. However, she'd made a bento for him before she left. Nanoka is on the train and reflecting on the night before. She finds it strange that he'd treat her so badly, then call her "kawaii" (cute). Before she can think further, she is groped by a pervert on the train.

At school, she tells her friends about this. Futaba-chan wonders why her brother didn't protect her, causing Nanoka to retort that she's not always with her brother. Meanwhile Koushiro taking lunch outside of work eats the bento from Nanoka. He reflects that first he felt guilty about his feelings for his sister and now he's jealous over her. He gets angry and stomps his feet causing the pigeons to flee.

After school, Nanoka takes the train home, then walks home in silence. At dinner, she notices that Koushiro hasn't come home yet, then that night in bed, she decides that she is angry with him for the things he says as she holds his bear. She hears him come home and hides under the covers of her futon, wondering if she should try to make up with him tomorrow.

The next day, she's surprised to learn that Koushiro took off before she did. That meant another crowded train ride with a potential molester. She's angry with her brother and as she thinks, Miyauchi-kun gives her a ticket to his class's function at the festival. He says for her to bring her oniichan or whomever, something she's not currently wanting to do. She decides that she'll never invite Koushiro, who's currently gone drinking with his female boss. Unfortunately, he's not listening to anything she says. That night, Nanoka lies awake, clearly unsure what to do.

The next day, she prepares to leave for school when Koushiro finally sees her and says he'll travel with her today. She says she'll go on, but he tells her not to avoid him because she's brooding. She accuses him of avoiding her and goes further by saying she doesn't like how he's been treating her of late, which comes out like she doesn't like him. He apologized for his behavior of the other night and tells her not to stay out late or lie, and that he's not saying she can't date guys. He knows she wasn't lying the other night and tells her so. He just worries about her. This makes Nanoka wonder if he really does worry about her that much.

They miss their train, which causes them to argue as they wait for the next train. He acuses her of being a kid. The train is crowded again and they are jostled around. Koushiro rescues her from being bumped into by so many people by grabbing her and getting her near the door. Then using his larger body, he shields her and keeps her safe, something she very much appreciates. As she leaves the train to walk the rest of the way to school, Koushiro wishes she'd remain a child forever while Nanoka seems to be unsure of how to take this change of attitude in her oniichan.

Hmmmm...I'm into the story even though I know the road is going to go places that are very, very taboo. I knew that from the start (obviously) but until now, I honestly didn't see how Nanoka would fall for her brother. Apparently, she'd been talking about "oniichan" a lot to have a reputation of having a brother complex, but this episode showed what I think is the event that truly causes her to look at her brother in a new light. We'll see where things go (creepy not withstanding).
