Title:Read or Die - TV
Episode:24: You Know Me
Synopsis
In ten days, on April 20th, all residents of Tokyo are supposed to listen to "an important announcement from the United Kingdom", regarding "Truly the biggest project in the history of mankind". Yomiko and Drake have decided to go to England in an attempt to derail Joker's plans at their source. Nancy asks to be taken along, in hopes of finding out "what I did and who I was". Yomiko promises to return to Japan afterwards to help Anita track down her sisters, but Anita no longer sees Michelle and Maggie as siblings. After the others have departed, Anita wanders around town, visiting familiar spots. She finally winds up at Nenene's apartment--where she runs into Michelle. She angrily accuses her of knowing that their fond memories from Hong Kong were all fabrications, and indeed she does know this, but only because Junior revealed it to her recently. Maggie shows up as well. Anita is furious, and declares that she would have been better off if she'd never met either one of them. Michelle is brought to tears; "Even if our memories are fake, the life we had here was absolutely real... I want to continue to be your elder sister forever". They all agree to continue on as sisters. Maggie feels a duty to go to the UK since she was the one who turned Nenene over to Joker. They hold an impromptu "Three Sisters Conference" and resolve to get even with the British Library. In London, Joker comments that "The glorious resurrection is close at hand". Junior is locked up, having somehow lost his ability to penetrate matter. "He's the one on whose shoulders the world is soon to be placed" Joker mentions. Nenene isn't offering any resistance and Joker wonders if she has finally "accepted her fate". Junior and Nenene find themselves in strange adjoining cells. She's hard at work on a new novel, having experienced a strange inspiration. "Mind you, I'm not doing it for the people here" she says. "It's for me and for those who are on their way here now". The three sisters arrive in England, but find the city of London strangely altered...

Well, I finally figured out why it was taking so long for this final DVD of the series to arrive--I had never added it to my rental queue! Once I did, it still took a long time--it must be quite popular. Getting into a series again after a break of six months or so isn't easy--that's one reason why I compose these detailed episode synopses. My memory can be pretty pathetic, and I think converting plotlines into words helps it out. Anyway, I recall thinking that this show was getting pretty far-out, and wondering if a plausible ending was really in the works. In a way, watching this series reminds me of rewatching Evangelion (and trying extra hard to make sense of it). In both cases I sort of need an expert (Forbin, in this case) to walk me through the episodes, and either confirm or correct the conclusions I draw. Both shows are highly complicated and it would be easy to become confused and lose track of just what is going on. For example, should I already know why something very odd has happened to London?

Forbin Hehe ok Stretch. This last arc is one of the hardest to understand. (It took me 3 viewings myself).

  • 1) The Sisters have been told their whole lifestyle up to meeting Nenene was a created. That's sorta a big blow to the fact that all 3 need each other. Being told you are a clone and nothing you know is real is hard to accept. But they do agree on one thing, to kick Joker's Ass.
  • 2) Joker's experiment of mind altering people (Using those big antennas) is a hit. They are able to tap into part of the Gentlemen's power with the books. (Remember that Gentlemen was a pseudo god). He is now ready for the next step which is to ready London for the return of the Gentlemen. The changes to the city are part of it.
  • 3) Nenene is the new 'Prophet' of the Gentlemen. She is there to write a book that will change the future (Sorta like a Bible). Instead, she is writing her own story which is contrary to what Gentlemen wants. Once the Gentlemen is restored though, he can and will change Nenene to obey his every command. At the moment she has the power but not the will to write the next Bible.
