Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou - 2: Rain and the Aftermath

Title:Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou
Episode:2: Rain and the Aftermath
Synopsis
Alpha has an accident while riding her motorscooter during a violent thunderstorm. "Ojisan", the old man from the filling station, finds her and takes her to a hospital. Her injuries are not too serious, but she must remain for a few days while her hair and some of her skin is replaced. After talking with the doctor, she notices tears on her cheeks--she likes the feeling. The friends who come to take her home are startled and amused by the wild shape of her new hair, and Alpha finds herself crying for a different reason. Later, she suddenly remembers "the place where my owner took me when I first arrived here", and races to reach the spot before the sun sets...
Comments
At first I thought this might be a another group's fansub of the first episode, because it starts with the same Op/introduction sequence, but other than that it is completely original. When Ojisan took Alpha to a "hospital", I wondered if he really knew she is a robot. The female doctor makes the comment "It's been a long time since I've worked on a robot", which suggests that Alpha is so lifelike that conventional doctors are best suited to treat/repair her, rather than technicians. She certainly acts like a real-live woman, as she expresses gratitude, becomes embarassed, and ponders beautiful scenery. Her sweet, lovable personality sort of reminds me of Marie from My Dear Marie. Minutes go by with very little dialogue--what there is is usually Alpha talking to herself. I was watching a fansub, yet notice that the only frame which contains any subtitles was from the music-video sequence. There are a number of scenes set at dawn and dusk, where the beautiful colors change rapidly as if the sun was in fast-forward mode--too fast to be realistic, but they get the message across. Somebody forgot to turn off the power in the now deserted city--again, not really feasible, but beautiful and moving nevertheless. During the credits the comment is made that "The second series of OVAs is out now". It turns out that the episodes I've been watching were made in 1998, and two more were released in 2002.
