Another good episode for me, though it is sad that Nayuki won't get her own story. However, I didn't think she would since her role was much different this time than it was in Kanon 2002. Shiori-chan gets a name drop and a couple of flashback scenes, but otherwise nothing. I know the writers need to move on because Ayu's story will take up the rest of the series (maybe it will take through 23 with 24 being aftermath, but we'll see), but the ending of Shiori's story last episode was just so abrupt.

Speaking of flashbacks, Mai and Makoto both get moments. I have to say that I do appreciate the writers not completely forgetting the other girls, even if they've been moved aside in one fashion or other as the tale progresses.

[Devil Doll, 2002-02-14:]
The ending of this episode is a good example for the difference between Kanon 2002 and 2006. In Kanon 2006 Yuuichi gets all emotional (providing a 60 seconds recap of this series) and Ayu's kiss (the second one in two consecutive episodes, and both times some loli kissing our hero - who said Kanon 2006 isn't a harem game? :P) came out of nowhere (although this little Uguu's development in recent episodes was astounding). In Kanon 2002 the course of events turns out a lot more dramatic, providing one of those marvellous cliffhangers that makes the Toei version so precious to me. Compared to this I was almost angry about the episode 19 ending in Kanon 2006. I also disliked how they just jumped back to the point where they left Ayu's arc early in this series, by letting Yuuichi support Ayu in searching something none of them can explicitly name (while in Kanon 2002 the "movie date" earlier in Kanon 2006 took place in the equivalent of this episode). The way Kanon 2006 glues the arcs together is a strange patchwork. What's more, Nayuki's reaction (effectively sanctioning the Yuuichi/Ayu pairing) isn't called for yet at this point. And can anyone imagine how Ayu credibly climbed up that tree, with its lowermost branch being in about five yards height? It was the audience who had to "look away", not Yuuichi...
What I liked about this episode was the additional Nayuki footage (with Yuuichi acting cluelessly being no random event, making his bicycle stunt appear inconsistent), the reference to Mai's hairband, the fact Shiori isn't forgotten (even Kitagawa knows about her situation now!), and the fact Kaori finally opened up about Shiori to her best friend Nayuki. I still consider Shiori's decision as stubborn as Kaori was before, but oh well.

Stretch:
Yes, the Shiori arc is definitely over and the Ayu arc begins. Well, something's happening--I just don't know what; that's the feeling I got from this episode. Nayuki couldn't have been referring to Yuuichi when she mentioned her one love who once rejected her, could she?
