(Three episodes watched):

I got a sort of a Walt Disney deja vu from episode one of this show, as the goofy looking characters Otto and Salman struck me as exactly the sort that we would see in a Disney production. But there was definitely nothing Disney-ish about the sexually abusive situation Fena is implied to have become entrapped in, what with things like strange men likely to 'have their way with her', etc. This show seems to wobble between being children's fare and a sexually explicit, fairly violent adult show. I had a hard time pinning it down; there's a strange mix of wooden sailing ships--and a submarine. England and Germany are mentioned, which surprised me since this had seemed more like an Isekai series. The thought occurred to me that maybe this show had been commissioned by an American firm--it seems to run on Crunchyroll--and written to appeal to American tastes. I did get the sense that episode one (which was about Fena's escape from an island) had made clear just what was important and where the story was going, which is something many if not most anime fail to do. Episode two wasn't quite as crystal clear, however. After meeting an old friend and comrade of her late (I think) father, Fena winds up trying to make sense of a transparent rectangular gemstone (I would describe it as a small pane of glass) which is critically important but nobody seems to know exactly why. She sets out with a team of Samurai/Ninja teenagers aboard what seems to be a submarine to look for clues, I guess. This was kind of bewildering, as it seemed to have come largely out of left field (where are they going if they apparently know nothing about this object?). On the plus side, Fena seems like a likable heroine. There is no sign of any 'pirates' until episode three. Whatever exactly this show is, I decided after episode three that I did not want to watch it. The jokes are weak and this strange but simple object did not inspire much curiosity within me. Perhaps the basic mystery wasn't spelled out well enough; Fena seems safe and sound for now, and the object is uninteresting, so what am I supposed to watch for? Like a number of series during the Summer 2021 season, the release of complete episodes of KO ran somewhat behind schedule, perhaps due to the pandemic and/or the Olympic games in Tokyo.
