By the Grace of the Gods is largely a pretty by-the-numbers isekai title about a businessman reincarnated into a magical world as a young boy with control over many slimes, having highly developed magical and combative abilities for his age, and able to get largely every relevant character within said alternate world to care for and admire him. The series does aim for a slice-of-life title exploring Ryoma bonding with a royal family, making a name for himself as an adventurer and businessman, and learning to develop his magical abilities. It does add a bit of depth to the series as Ryoma's past life was depicted to be a miserable one and his life in the new one is much better. But most other characters largely have their archetypes that don't get much fleshing out. In short, By the Grace of the Gods doesn't do much else new that other isekai titles like it have done with the oversaturation of the genre done in recent years. Whether or not this strikes your interest will depend on your interest in isekai titles as a whole.

By The Grace of the Gods is a light-hearted, slice of life anime that mostly takes place in a another world. The synopsis up top should pretty much cover the jist of it. As for this series, I actually am surprised on well it turned out to be. I honestly believed that it would be an anime turn into an adventure type story with some major action. I was surprised that it was nothing more than a very mild story which didn't go over the top. I can say I'm a bit disappointed that it wasn't the action packed anime I wanted it to be but it's still a very solid anime.

It centers around the character Ryoma. A middle-aged businessman with a very boring life mixed with a lot of a stress from work and his own personal life. He then dies in a sad way (by sneezing in his sleep). It's pretty complicated but that aside he ends up meeting with 3 gods. They tell him what has happened and gives him a second chance at life in another world. He gets reincarnated as an 8 y.o. boy and that's where it all begins.

The episodes themselves are really simple. There are really no surprises or whatnot. It's something that I'm really not used to since this isn't really my favorite genre. At least it's set in a fantasy like world instead of the modern world. It would be almost unbearable to watch. It almost reminds me of Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni. The only difference is that Ryoma has magic where the protagonist in the other anime relies on his smartphone for magic. Plus, Ryoma is extremely more powerful and has more life experience which gives him an edge in his new world. That and the fact Ryoma has more than a thousand slimes as his familiars.

In the end, it's certainly a way to break up any monotony that anyone is experiencing. It's not enough to make me want it in my collection but it's a decent change. You can watch it with a younger audience and it might be a good way to introduce them to anime if it's the first time to watch. For vets like myself, it's more of a take it or leave it thing, This could be too boring for action oriented lovers. If you're into this type of anime, go for it. It's pretty much for all ages and very light-hearted. Not bad and is interesting if you can get into it.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:4202#628]
(Two episodes watched):

Well, while I generally enjoy isekai type anime, this show didn't intrigue me nearly as much as 100-Man no Inochi no Ue ni Ore wa Tatteiru (S1) or King's Raid: Ishi o Tsugumono-tachi, which are two other isekai (or near-isekai) anime that have come out this season. It almost felt like a children's show in comparison. There is no serious violence and things seem almost idyllic in this world. I guess the idea is that this show will rely more on comedy, but it wasn't exactly hilarious either. The slime theme immediately reminded me of Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken, which I think it is safe to say was both more intriguing and more humorous than episode one of this show. What role will they play here? They don't exactly endear themselves to me. Was there really any need to include Ryoma's past life in our world? It basically serves as a curious explanation of why he possesses magical powers, and I bet this show would have worked just as well if any other explanation (or no explanation at all) had been offered. Basically, my impression of episode one was that this would be a very lightweight show with little to offer in exchange for my time. No questions that I must have answers for leapt to mind, but I watched episode two in part because I was curious who this blonde girl is. But she didn't turn out to have much of a story behind her, and episode two frankly struck me as rather boring. What is the basic conflict behind this show? Will the Gods intervene in Ryoma's new life, creating some sort of a difficult choice for him? For now there's no sign of it. With a horde of new Fall 2020 anime to deal with, I have no time for lukewarm shows like this one.
