Release the Spyce offers up a solid, though nothing new, premise involving several high school girls who are secretly part of a group of ninjas tasked with protecting their city from a criminal organization. The series doesn't dabble into particulars like how Tsukikage came to be and does require quite a bit of suspension of disbelief to get into with how they have the resources to operate with their secret underground lair and equipment. But the storytelling's solid enough to explore the challenges faced by the girls in trying to unravel Moryo's plots and there is a decent amount of fleshing out offered of the girls' motives and personalities, a few of whom having their hardships to deal with due to Moryo's crimes. The chemistry between the master and student pairings of Tsukikage also makes for one of the more enjoyable highlights of the series with the chemistry and different outlooks each pair have when approaching situations. While not the most groundbreaking anime, Release the Spyce is still an entertaining title I'd at least recommend watching one since the fleshing out and chemistry between the girls of Tsukikage make up the highlight of the series.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:3584#628]
(One episode watched):

This show seems to follow the basic premise of a worthy protagonist being offered, completely or largely by coincidence, a too-good-to-be-true chance at self-respect and purpose for his/her life. But the particulars here were so far-fetched that it was hard to take the show seriously. Momo can divine a person's mood by licking them? Super sophisticated (and no doubt fantastically expensive) technology in the hands of high school girls? A ninja frog? It seemed like a show that was not worrying very much about being plausible. James Bond-like gadgets are one thing, but there has got to be a believable plot as well. These girls are so good at what they do, and (other than Momo) so confident that it is hard to conceive of them winding up in a serious jam someday. It's a one-sided fight, which isn't terribly exciting. The show wasn't terrible, however; Momo has some personality and we can wonder a little whether she will earn a place within Tsukikage. But the whole thing seemed so far-out to me (and the good vs. evil theme seemed so simplistic) that I decided to dispense with Release the Spyce.
