Having taken the name of a stranger who died protecting her, Kino now lives in the forest with Shishou and trains hard at being an expert shot with pistols and guns. She would like to somehow find Kino’s village or family, and tell them of his fate, but with only a first name and the distinctive coat that was worn by him, she does not have much to go on. With the assistance of Hermes, her talking motorcycle, they begin a strange adventure traveling to different countries and encountering exotic people, while chasing down possible leads.

This "movie" helps provide answers to Kino's background that weren't addressed in the TV series. You get to learn how Kino gained her skills with a gun, her clothing, her habit to address herself as "boku", and cutting her hair short. The Kino in this "movie" is quite different from the one you see on her journeys with her unsure and conflicted personality stemming from her guilt for the original Kino's death. This short gives you a good sense of just how Kino was before her journeying, even with the surprising shift in mood during the final half of the movie. Like the TV series, the movie retains its simplistic character designs which is still a bit of an eyesore for me.

Life Goes On makes for a decent extra for Kino's Journey fans as you get provided some additional depth to Kino's character. For those who have yet to see the TV series, it's best to watch that before seeing this movie.

I can only share that this is a very uncommon story. In a placid and tranquil forest, a young thirteen-old-girl is trained to be an expert in using rifles and pistols by her Shishou. Kino decides that she wants to follow up on a lead as to her name-sake and is sent by Shishou to visit a certain house along the way. In visiting the house, the story loses all of its apparent innocence as Kino is attacked by a very troubled woman and has to defend herself. (I almost want to add 'horror' to this series keyword listing.)

The 13 episodes of the TV series was picked up for R1-release by ADV, but they did NOT pick up the rights for this 30-minute "movie".

While it is 'called' a prequel to the TV series, it only introduces the main characters and offers a hint of the strange storyline of this series. The TV series has a flashback episode which reveils the history of how Kino gained her name and first met her traveling companion, a motorbike named Hermes.
