One of the better quality Pokemon movies, Spell of the Unown centers on a young girl using the power of an artifact from her missing father to manifest her thoughts into reality through the psychic power of the Pokemon known as Unown. In spite of the typical Pokemon battles that result from its conflict, the movie offers a solid exploration of its themes in the form of family bonds and loneliness as Molly makes use of her newfound power to isolate herself from the world due to her loneliness, with Ash and friends literally having to shatter apart her inner world to have her confront reality with the reality warping she is doing. This doesn't make her a typical antagonist for a children's anime who is seeking to wreck havoc or world domination, as Molly has genuine emotional trauma she is struggling to cope with due to the disappearance of her parents and this makes her into a sympathetic character due to this layer of depth to her character. Like past Pokemon films, Spell of the Unown is sporting better animation quality over the TV anime with cleaner scenery and character designs, as well as more fluid movement during battle scenes. Pokemon fans should certainly check out this film considering it sticks out as one of the better quality films within the franchise.

I must say, Pokemon the Movie 3 was truly an enjoyable film. Sure it's kid's stuff, but that doesn't mean it can't be well done. To enjoy it, though, one must forget the whole "I hate Pokemon" backlash and not be too self-conscious. Just sit back with an open mind and watch it.
The animation is very impressive, much better than the first movie, and lightyears better than the television show. The backgrounds, while simple, are crisp and inviting. The same character designs are the same, though a bit more detail has been added. I have always liked the character designs in Pokemon, and they look great here. The english voice cast returns, complete with Brock (yay!) and the addition of Lisa Ortiz as a character also named Lisa. Everyone involved does a fine job, with a wider range of emotions well conveyed. It is obvious that the already talented voice cast is evolving and growing.
The story is quite smart, and the Pokemon characters work much, much better when the threat is personal like it is here, rather than global, as was the case in the first movie. Ash is much more believable trying to rescue his mother instead of saving the world.
The music is a lushly orchestrated musical score greatly adds to the enjoyment, as it adds depth and emotion in the few mediocre scenes and compliments the many good scenes.
Overall, Pokémon the Movie 3: Spell of the Unown is not only worth watching, it's worth buying. If one can forget the stigma of Pokemon and watch it with an open mind, it is a very, very enjoyable anime. Great character chemistry, better writing than usual, and high quality animation make for a pleasant anime that all ages can experience.
