Mahiru Shirota is a guy who just can't leave any problem unsolved. When, for example, he encounters a stray cat, he feels he must adopt it. But it turns out that this is only a cat when exposed to sunlight--the rest of the time, it's a vampire. A strangely listless and lackadaisical vampire, however.

At the moment when Kuro describes himself as a hikkimori vampire, I sat up and took notice. I sensed that the combination of two such totally opposite concepts--frightening, dangerous vampires, and people who are often seen as lazy and irresponsible--might be indicative of comic brilliance. This would take a good deal of talent, but if only it could be made to work the reward might be handsome. But, alas, I read too much into this show. The people making it had no intention of pushing the envelope, no, they either did not sense the opportunity which the premise offered or had no wish to take the risks. My assumption had been that this premise was tailor made for comedy, but apparently they did not see it the same way. The jokes were completely unfunny and instead action seems to be meant to attract viewers. If I had gotten a few decent laughs I might not have cared if the plot made much sense (though a comprehensive one is always good) but since they weren't I couldn't help noticing how confusing it is. Vampires aren't necessarily bad? They can go for centuries without drinking blood? They can transform into cats? They can be bound to humans (servant vampires)? Their personalities and dress are sometimes wildly ostentatious? I just don't sense any basic conflict which needs to be resolved being laid out to us. Because the plot was so unfocused and tiresome, and the protagonist so undeveloped (all he has is his obsession with getting things done), I never felt much interest in this show and was impatient for it to be over with. I hate waste, and if you're not going to exploit an opportunity with great potential, and instead will only use it to create what is looking like a thoroughly average anime, I would rather do something else altogether.
