test.anime.mikomi.org is almost ready to go live. You can now edit series and episodes there. I think the series edit interface is much improved.

Remaining:

  • New reviewer creation
  • Finish bug and todo integration with http://www.bestpractical.com/rt/ RT.
  • Add logging back in (so that changes made on test.anime.mikomi.org show up on "What's New")
  • Clean up the sidebar
These should be done in the next week or two.

Are HTML tags going to be allowed?

Yes. New reviews will have the full wiki markup available to them, which does include many HTML tags.

OK, cool. The reason I asked was that the reviews on the test site were showing the HTML tags rather than using them.

I look forward to writing on the new site. ^_^

They are still showing up in the episode pages, but I think I saw you were still working on that.

Will we need to manually link series on the new site? I ask because I will at times reference sequel series, spinoffs, etc. in the description to aid the reader. Having the links are cool.

Could you give me an example of an episode showing up that way?

Autolinking on the new site is a complicated topic. Existing entries will probably be autolinked (one way or another). For new entries I'm thinking of providing an auto-link button on the edit screen. Clicking it would have the server do its best effort to add links to your text. After it completed you'd have an opportunity to correct it.

So links will be explicit with any new reviews however it is likely that you won't have to manually link everything.

I will be encouraging people to add links to series that haven't been reviewed yet (for instance: Akage no Anne). Currently clicking on the link will take you to the search string but I'll be changing that to take you to the "create a series" screen.

This may be interesting to note, but with the FireFox browser, the manual HTML tags used all seem to all show up while they do not on IE.

As for the episode HTML tags, I saw them here but all episodes are the same:

Hmm, it seems to be a bizzare intermitent error. When I viewed these in Firefox I saw the HTML tags. It's definitely not browser dependent. As soon as I touched the "text" component (which handles tag interpolation) it started producing correct output.

Bug squished.

Extremely techinical details: To determine if I should let HTML through I defined a function named "haveweb." It's a closure around a lexically scoped regurlar expression. I did this in two seperate packages with different regular expressiosn. Unfortunatly, while variables can be lexically scoped, functions can not (well, not with normal calling conventions) (named functions are exclusively package scoped). So I renamed the functions and now all is happy.

I just looked up Please Twins (Which I FINALLY saw the OVA) and I noticed all the autolinks were turned off.

A couple of new things.

If you are in What's new on The test site it is whats-new.html But on the old site it is whats-new. Just a little notice when I tried to switch between old and new.

2nd on the test site I noticed you do not show 'action-packed' as a new keyword added but you do on the old site.

Yeah, if you go to whats-new (no .html) on the new site then it will redirect you to whats-new.html. There should be no broken links as a result of the transition despite the fact that many URLs are slightly different on the new site. Using the old URLs will just redirect you to the new ones.

As for the keyword, good catch! I had forgotten that I had updated the whats-new on the old site. I've added syncing those to my todo list.

http://test.anime.mikomi.org/edit/series/Aa! Megami-sama! TV.html contains HTML "p" and "/p" tags in the synopsis which are erroneourly entity-encoded, and thus displayed.

By the way, when I tried to report this I stumbled over another problem:

Replying to this thread when you're not logged in causes "404: Page not found - The page that you were looking for could not be found." (instead of "You're not entitled to post to this board".)

But then I noticed that when I brought up the keyword table it messed up the title and shifted it 1 inch to the right causing my screen to add horizontal scrollbars.

I'm not so much concerned over keywords since I think there are more than enough now (the exception being adding new years). However for notables, will we still be able to manually add new ones to the database?

I only see the /p when I go to view the series. That's because there is no opening "p" tag. However this does raise another issue which I had over looked. While the tags display as expected when viewing they look wacko when editing. I'll fix this.

Replying to this thread when you're not logged in causes "404: Page not found - The page that you were looking for could not be found." (instead of "You're not entitled to post to this board".)
Hmm, are you getting this on the new site or the old site? I don't get a 404 on the new site. If you're still seeing 404's please include the URL that produces the 404. I did find a different problem though: If you weren't logged in and you clicked "Post" then it would take you to the login page. After logging in it would return you to the topic. This wasn't quite right: It was supposed to return you to the topic with the post textbox open. I've corrected this.

Hmm, I'm not sure what I want to do about that. It doesn't do it for me at 1024x768 with a maximized browser window, in Firefox in Mac OSX. I'll have to try it on Windows and see how layout is there...

I've been working on an massively improved "What's New". You can find it here. Most of the improvement is in the data model and thus not yet visible. It is, however, much much faster then the existing one.

What it will allow is a list of exactly which fields have changed when an update occurs.

Would a future "What's new" know that someone edited an episode review?

Would it notice that someone posted the same review content as before (such as editing a synopsis to a series, notables etc. where an own series review already exists - this is currently noted as "updated his/her review")?

Of course. Though I hasten to point out that these are not attributes of "What's New" but rather of the logging. However given that I have to reimplement logging for the new site anyway, I would of course do these things. Making any change to any database will produce log entries (including, the wiki, comments, etc).

There's a forum error. This thread is OK since it is accessable from the forum link, but attempting to go to the complete list of topics generates "System Error" and a page full of code.

What I wanted to ask was about linking, as in the proper way to do it. I think there is another thread discussing this, but with the forum error, I can't access it.

While editing an episode review the new GUI entity-encodes double quotes to &quot in the episode synopsis but leaves them unchanged in the comment window... ?

And I'd like both windows (episode synopsis and comment) to be a little higher (more lines being displayed while editing would make proof-reading easier).

I can't reproduce the effect right now. Maybe it's gone by one of your updates?

Then again, right now I'm experiencing the brackets effect Forbin mentioned before while editing the Haibane Renmei episodes. But this isn't reproducable either in all episodes - I'm not sure if it depends on whether I edited the episode with the new software before or not.

The handling of newlines in episode reviews by the new version puzzles me as well - sometimes empty lines are doubled in display-only more, sometimes not, sometimes empty lines are auto-converted to "br" tags... I'm just confused now.

If the formats are incompatible (as I assume, I've noticed the escaping of my squared brackets in series reviews to hide them from being taken as WiKi meta symbols), do the entries in new format contain a version number to make sure what's old and what's new format?

Something like that, yeah. If a text field has no type associated with it, it is assumed to be legacy. "HTP" is the standard Wiki type. "HTM" is HTML + WikiTags (but no Wiki style formating (ie --- for an HR tag), and finally "PLN" is plain text with newlines converted into BRs. Currently I'm only using HTP.

As you've surely noticed, the site is live now! The old site can still be accessed by going to http://old.anime.mikomi.org/ though it will quickly lose usefulness (as it doesn't know how to handle the newfangled wikiified text). Still, you can add notables and keywords there, which you can't do here, yet.
