Mikan is a simple outgoing middle school girl, who has befriended the very quiet and intelligent Hotaru, but together they make quite a pair. The terminally happy Mikan and the super genius Hotaru were always hanging out together, and then suddenly Hotaru left. After six months of no letters, no phone calls and only one postcard, Mikan gets so concerned that she chases her friend down and finds her at Alice Gakuen (Alice Academy), a special school for kids with special abilities. A teacher invites Mikan to attend, but on a probationary basis. Mikan is happy that she gets to attend classes with Hotaru again, but finds herself in a class with other students who all have “alices” or special abilities. Some can read minds, while others have telekinetic or fire starting abilities. But what did the teacher see in Mikan? Might she have a special ability?

Watch chibi [series:942#2380]
The Alice Academy is a boarding school for kids with special abilities, "alice", which can be thought of as either magical or paranormal -- the show doesn't bother much with explaining where it comes from. A lot of the show is taken up with the standard middle-school hijinx and problems, but there are some darker elements as well. Since people with alice can be both dangerous and valuable, the school carefully controls the lives of the students, and there are forces outside of the school that try to exploit them. In the center of it all is Mikan, who has an unusual alice that nobody is quite sure what to do with, and as a result she gets to play the role of the outsider trying to find her place in the school, and providing a unique perspective on it.

All too often, however, the conspiracies and magical rules turn into a muddle in the series, as if the writers hadn't quite thought them all through but needed something to fill in the next show. Also, the humor in Gakuen Alice is written to appeal to a fairly young audience, and there are times when it gets a little irritating. That being said, this series has a unique style of character design and action that made it worth watching, at least for me. Mikan builds some interesting relationships with the other students over the 26 episodes, and Hotarus's kooky inventions were always good for a laugh. It's a bit of an acquired taste kind of show, but if you get the chance you should give the series a try.

Unevaluated Forbin [series:942#1573]
Episode 3 Watched.

After looking at a stack from a certain someone (you know who you are!) I pulled this out to give it a try.

I'm not sure I like this one all that much. It's got Loli, magic, danger, and all the other elements for a good show but Mikan is just way toooo whiny.

Rent Jan-Chan [series:942#967]
This is a pretty strange and humorous series. It is obviously oriented to young teen girls, but it does have a lot to offer those anime fans with a very strong sense of humor and whimsy.

The smarter and techno genius Hotaru is always “picking” Mikan, but she is so good-natured and happy that she does not seem to be bothered. Later on in the series, one come to understand Hotaru is very fond of Mikan, but she just has a special way of showing it. Their class at Alice Gakuen has only a dozen students, but they are all exceptional characters with weird abilities and even stranger priorities.

This series gets a 'qualified' RENT rating. The question would be are you between the ages of 8 to 12 years old or could you get into an anime series that is obviously oriented to this target audience. If you have nieces or nephews around this age, then this series would make a good holiday gift.
