This series details the adventures of a wandering female samurai and a Chinese martial arts "expert" who playfully refers to herself as Myao-oneesan. Tsukikage Ran, the main character, is a female ronin whose swordsmanship is second to none, while Myao's commands the often amusing but deadly display of NekoTekken (Cat Iron Fist). Together, they form an unstoppable crime fighting duo.

Each episode builds up to an amazing sword-action sequence which are all spectacularly animated and choreographed, with comic relief supplied by the oft boastful and hilariously over-the-top Myao.

The series plays with many themes typical to "feudal-Japan-anime" like corruption, Yakuza, and the search for really good sake.

13 TV Episodes (~24min each)
"風" ("kaze") = "wind"; "まかせ" ("makase") from = "任す" = "makasu" = "relying upon"; "月影" ("tsukikage") = "moonlight", "蘭" ("ran") = "orchid"; so the title means "The moonlight orchid who relies on the wind".

Hmmm, it looks like this series was trying to be a homage of sorts to old Japanese samurai live-action films yet with female characters. The series is entirely episodic in its stories where Ran and Meow are mingling with one another and dispatch whatever evil is affecting the locale they visit. A couple episodes have some focus on aspects of Ran and Meow's past, but not really enough for one to know them more beyond whatever personalities and quirks (Ran being a calm and collected sake-loving swordswoman, Meow the energetic and impulsive martial artist) they carry throughout the show. Animation and music is decent for what it delivers, but it is nothing out of the ordinary for a 2000 anime. If you have a love for Japanese chanbara films, you'll likely get the most enjoyment out of seeing Tsukikage Rin.

Did I really want to watch this story? Yes ... probably.

With no continuity, carry-through or character development, this series is pretty much thirteen stand alone stories (or episodes), all centering around the two main characters. And unfortunately, they all share a similar story line.

You can count on ....
  • Myao to always worry about money
  • Myao to always start a fight
  • Ran to always be looking for sake
  • Ran will always be underestimated and diss'd
  • Ran will always end any fight by kicking a**

The setting is 16th century Japan. The villans are pretty much interchanable (street thugs, yakusa, corrupt officials, kidnappers, etc). Otherwise the animation and music are fair, but not memorable. Perhaps you can tell how unimpressed I was with this series.

This series is worth a watch, but only if you're desperate for a distraction. Shura No Toki tells a similar story, but with a far better plot and more interesting characters.

Ran is a ronin who during her travels runs into Lady Meow of the Iron Cat Fist(no relation to Steve Bennett's group). The two of them constantly keep bumping into each other in each episode and help some people in need that they just happen to come across. Despite Ran's mastery of the sword, she has a definate weakness for sake, and Meow keeps causing trouble wherever she goes. It's not as funny as Jubei-chan, but worth checking out.
